Face Lift or non-Face Lift?

As I am awaiting my shiny new bible to arrive.
What is the difference between the Face Lift (c98?) models and the pre one?
Things that I have figured out for myself are.
Rear lights (Damn obvious that one but also I have looked at ones that I believe to be retro fitted).
Cerbera style button under the wing mirror for the doors (I personally prefer the pre production show Cerbera "knock plate" door opener)
and Indicators, um indicators indicators being in between the Rev and Speedo.
I am sure there must be more substantial changes of a more significant engineering nature. And the more important question is... Are they worth paying the inevitable premium for?

the main changes to cars that are considered faclifts are the front cerbera style grill revision and the mirror door openers you already mentioned. More subtle changes were and extended boot lip and colour coded bumper strip. there are also the dash layout changes.
that lot happened around 97.
other changes were the rear lights around 98
and then the hidden hinges on the boot in 99
obvious the latest cars had the faired in headlight around 2001 i believe

This model had many subtle changes over the years. I believe the change you refer to is when the front was changed to look more like the Cerbera with a bar from one side to the other, the change to wing mirror opening was around the same time. The rear lights were a later change and the boot hinge also had changes during this time, firstly from oval alloy to round alloy hinges then to completely concealed hinges.
Some may tell you that there are defined times for each change but I have seen hybrids that have later changes without earlier changes. I suppose it depends on what stock the factory had on the shelf at the time.

I've heard the phrase "Serp engine" but have no idea what the difference is?
Is that the X bolted one?
What do I look for to see which engine it is?
Please excuse my ignorance, I've had enough of buying cars that I really didn't care about and it's time to absorb as much info as possible so as not to get a lemon and so the high pressure salesmen run off screaming.

The best way to decide whether you want to pay extra for the cosmetic changes is look at some cars side by side, either at a dealer of a TVRCC/PH meet.
I found it interesting recently at a PH meet, comparing the dash layout, boot hinges and lip size of my '98 to an earlier car. There seem to be quite a number of subtle changes that happened between '95/6 and '98. The Serp engine is easy to spot just by lifting the bonnet.

The Serpentine (or Serp) engine is one with one long belt running around the front of the engine driving the alternator, water pump, PAS etc. etc. Pre-serpentine engines have multiple belts rather than one long one. IOW, the Serpentine engines are of a newer specification.

The facelifted ones have slightly larger bonnet vents aswell.
The bump strip on the bumper is not just colour coded but extends a bit further out aswell.
From about Feb 98 the backlit number plate was replaced with a slanted top lit one, and you had the four round tail lights fitted at about the same time.
