4L SC or 4L TURBO????
Discussion
was thinking giving the british lady some extra power this year.after the last dyno was showing 246hp(4 litres)i was pretty happy.now looking for more!!just noticed last night that TVR power were doing a turbo kit for the 4 litres...what do u guys think about it???keeping in mind i live in a hot country and use my car pretty much everyday!!!tks for ur comments...
Forced induction heats the air up as it is compressed.
Turbo's heat the air up even more, due to heat transmitted from the exhaust through the turbines/casings.
If you have a high ambient air temperature, then you will want to pay special attention to intake charge temperatures - with a turbo even more so.
I don't know if you would require a larger intercooler with a turbo than a SC (prob dependant on ambient air temps) - but if you do, then this may have an effect on the airflow to your radiator.
A turbo will increase the temperature under the bonnet, and it's proximity to the radiator (combined with the possibility of less airflow to rad if blocked by larger intercooler) may result in the radiator cooling the engine even less efficiently.
IMO, if you have high ambient air temperatures, then I would be looking at a SC install rather than a turbo...

wow first to reply..DOM himself!!!tks for ur quick reply...the thing is i did contact u(david actually)last year..my var has aircon and PS as well!!!did u guys manage to go around that with the piping???i do like turbos a lot!!!how about with fitting RADteck and a big intercooler???what is the price now for the SC kit???tks for ur help DOM>>

I'd go with a supercharger if I could afford it, smoother power delivery all through the rev band
rather than a boot up the arse that catches you out with a turbo.
Also turbo heat could be a problem, especially in warmer countries and the possibility of turbo lag, what a way to spoil a chim

I would sell your engine for what ever you can get then get V8D to build you one of there engines to your specification ,it will work out cheaper than sticking a super Charger on a weedy little 4l with standard heads and it could blow up at any time . ..

. Nothing like a new engine

Work it out !
I dont think youll find a definetive answer, its all down to personal preference. There are equal reasons to have both.
One thing is for sure though, you need to have really good control over the ignition and fueling, Ive fitted a blower to mine and Im amazed at how much advance needs to be taken out in boost, especially when it gets heat soak in traffic. A turbo would probably be worse in that respect, so either way, look at good management, you certainly couldnt rely on the standard setup,
thanks

Water injection will take care of any heat issues, it's reliable and simple. Snow Performance do some decent kits but there are other options. I'd pick turbo/s, after all, who wants the crank and engine sapping your power
In terms of charge temp yes, but it won't address under-bonnet temps and the radiator cooling concerns that I would have with a turbo set-up in places with higher ambient air temperatures...

There are lots of production turbo cars which happily work in hot climates. Heat management isn't difficult if you have a bit of common sense.^ I've seen fibreglass shields available for turbine housings which work fine. There's usually a gap of half an inch betweeen the housing and the shield. Or, you can use stainless with a heat retardant liner on the inside. There's no reason why turbo's can't be used in grp bodied cars. You'll find them shoehorned into many a corvette and they're not spacious either. Also, there are fwd cars which have turbo's mounted close to the radiator. The air's flowing from the radiator towards the turbo, not the other way round. Heat management and some basic planning is all that's needed. The power gains make it worth it

Just don`t understand why anyone would spend 5k plus on a hair dryer for a 4l.. when you can have a full engine rebuild with ported heads, cam etc for the same money !!!
How about, it's easy to remove the blower and then the car's back to standard?? Just a thought...Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
