Took dizzy cap off to check rotor arm condition. Didn't write down which leads were which (yes I KNOW), because I knew I had the Bible and there are lots of resources on't net to show me the firing order for a rover v8 etc. Spent rest of the day trying to get the car started again following all the diagrams to show me where the leads should connect. In the end took ALL the spark plugs out - god they are a pain to get to - and pushed the car along with a probe in cylinder #1 feeling for TDC. then connected up as per firing order starting from the one that was pointed to by the rotor arm and Hurrah car works again. But the lead layout is completely different to EVERY diagram on the net and in the Bible?!?!?!!?!? Have now written the numbers on the dizzy cap for future reference...

Had this before with MG V8. Probably your dizzie is installed at a different orientation. Makes all the diagrams in the world irrelevant.
< This, you can put the rotor arm where you like as long as the leads are shuffled around the cap appropriately it don't matter, its just far nicer to have the rotor on No1 firing in that set position the manual's state you you have a known quantity reference point, you will prbably find someoine as had the dizzy out at some point maybe part of a cam change etc and just shoved it back any old how
it wont affect the way the car runs so just correct it when the dizzy is next out
