Recently the fans have been kicking in earlier than normal (around 60 as indicated by the temp gauge) and staying on. Is this likely to be a faulty otter switch or something else?

I would imagine faulty otter switch.

Is your gauge reading right.

The otter switch would be a good starting point, assuming that you are happy that there aren't any airlocks etc..

Mine exhibited similar symtoms, although they (fans) did switch off again. Confusingly it started just after I had replaced the rad/hoses etc., so I initially thought it was connected to that. New otter switch and all was back to normal.

Can we trust the temp gauge?

The gauge hasn't changed its characteristics so the otter switch looks to be the likely candidate

So where's the best place to buy it?

I got mine from my local motor factor.

The part was Facet 7.5000 92/87degrees. IIRC, this was a replacment for an older part no. 50200, which I think was Intermotor. TVR part no. is K0094. Straightforward to fit.

The link below might help for reference nos.(otter listed under engine). Different temps available, depending on what you want, operating temps. normally stamped on unit itself, so you can double check what's fitted already.
