What exhaust mod shall i do???

Hi,

I am in the process of changing my manifold gaskets and can confirm its as bad as the threads say!..i aint even got it off yet and my fingers are shredded!...I have the exhaust off and whilst I have the chance want to mod it for sum extra sound even power hopefully...I know people have done the cat removal or the sleeve mod in the silencer...Can you do both ??? or whats the best for a truly great sound??

I replaced mine with a straight-through; cost £120---makes an awesome sound but,frankly, take some aspirins if you are going on a long journey. One other point--lots of snap pop and crackle BUT I have a slight loss of power due I suppose to the reduced back pressure. A good compromise is to replace only two thirds with straight through and keep the rest perforated.

I've had loads of trouble with my exhaust. First the pre cats jumped out and blocked the main cat, so I cut approx 40mm out of the main cat and unblocked it. That was OK for a while, but then the main cat started to disintegrate.

Two days ago I removed the main cat and replaced it with a free flow sports cat. It now sounds and performs great. I have no need to sleeve the silencer.

Ntel, tell us more what did you fit and how much!!

I contacted Blackthorn Auto Catalysts (www.autocats.com)who sell a free flow cat for £223 including the reducing cones (the new cat is 13mm less in diameter and therefore reducers are required), VAT and Delivery. The new cat was delivered the next day.

I removed the existing Y piece then cut out the old cat at the welds with a hacksaw. The cut ends of the Y piece and the collection pipe were then prepared for welding. I then welded the reducing cones to the new cat. The collection pipe was then welded on the end of the new cat section. I placed the assembly into the exhaust pipe in position and then fitted the Y piece to the manifolds. The two pieces were then accuratley marked to ensure correct alignment. The pieces were then removed from the car and then fully welded. The complete assembly was refitted.

The whole job took 6 hours. It was a swine of a job to get everything lined up properly.

All welding was carried out using the TIG process ( Argon shield )

Well worth doing IMHO. Sounds grrrrrrrrrreat!!!!!!!

Right I think the 2/3 sleeve mod will work wonders for my car and the neighbours by the sound of it. Where do you chop the box to sleeve only 2/3, im sure ive asked this before and people have different idear's, i dont want any whistle noises. Sum chop the box completely in 2 in the centre then put the pipe over the other ends i think..others chop the top of the box off i think....can anyone please shed exact details where i should hack to sleeve the pipe as im keen to get started but dont wanna f**k anything up...

Yeah that would be cool, i keep hearin people sayin how great they are but have neva heard one..I need to attack mine this weekend cause i need my mota for work so might have to be brave and preform "open exhaust box surgery" 2moro morning...
