engine cuts out when standing still
Discussion
Hi,
on my 1996 chimaera 400HC i have a problem with the engine cutting out when the engine should be just ticking-over. i.e. at a junction.
could this be something to do with a regulator thingy just under the bonnet near the dash end? if so, please could someone tell me what that part is and as to whether i should get it replaced or perhaps be able to clean it? absolute nightmare trying to get into my garage as a result.
perhaps it's something else though?
Thoughts and comments as to potential problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
N
If it does it as you arrive at a junction then it could be the sensor on the rear diff which feeds the speedo and the ECU. If the ECU gets the wrong info it misfuels and doesn't tell the stepper motor to do its thing and the car stalls. It will start immeditately and seem fine if this is the case (restarting resets the reading and fuelling etc. is correct for tickover).
Could just be the stepper motor needing a spit and polish though.

try contacting "ncs" im sure he had exactly the same fault turned out to be a amplifier problem, which i am sure is something to do with the coil
IIRC ncs had a problem with restart, after he stopped the hot engine.
Sounds like Stepper Motor but wait for shpub to comment.

Spot on, but this was made even worse by the hot start problem Al mentioned.
The amplifier on the coil (??) was changed & it works well now.
