I've just had a call from a guy in Germany about my Chim which is for sale, and I’m not sure how the deal would work?

What’s the best method of taking payment and making sure I don’t get scammed ?

Is there anything i need to do differently selling to someone in Europe ?

Just beware of high denomination euro notes.

I seem to recall a friend took high denomination notes, maybe 200 or maybe 500 euro notes(?) from a German chap when he sold his Beemer. It transpires that they were perfectly legit, but he couldn't exchange them at any normal bank/currency exchange. He had to go all the way to London in person to one of the only places that he could find that would take them. Apparently normal practice in Germany to not bat an eyelid on large denominations!

Yes 500 Euro notes can be a bit tricky to change. No banks would take it round here but funnily enough the bureau de change at Beaulieu Autojumble took it no problems.

Take money (banks/ATMs normally don't issue 200 and 500 euro notes anyway, I went on the ferry with an envelope stuffed with £50, 20 and 10 notes...), give V5 and keys to new owner, job jobbed. smile

Seems like alot of hassle for you having to deal with Euro's. Get the buyer to go through the hassle of paying you in GBP cash or just sell it to a uk Buyer.

Ah sorry, of course I paid in GBP (post above amended); I'm assuming that a German buyer would do the same...

Sorry 900 was not aimed at you just responding to the chap who said about the 200 and 500 euro Notes and having to go to London to cash them in. Sounds like a mission for a seller.

Hi,
What I did when I sold my Tamora, was to ask the guy to bring cash with him (£ notes only). Then we both went to nearest Bank/Building Society and deposited the money and completed the transaction.
Simple but effective.

i sold my Cerbera to Jan from Finland, he paid me in 500 euro notes, i didnt realise it would be a problem, i got them changed at beaureau de change in the west end of London,i phoned around and got a really good deal on the exchange rates which worked out an extra £250 on the deal ;-)
it was a hassle free deal with a really friendly guy, i would suggest copying the log book, mot and any documents you sign at least twice, just in case.

jan documented his trip back to Finland in the Cerb on pistonheads, very impressive driving all that way in the snow.

Offer a refundable deposit...

Most of the people on the TVR CC Germany, are looking for a car and most are serious. They would be willing to bring Cash on pick-up, or TX money in advance after having seen the car. The ones that are dodgy wouldn't TX you a refundable deposit to hold the car...

But in 500 Euro notes
I went into town to find No banks or Post offices etc. Would take them, I had to go all the way to London to get them exchange to UK Pounds

I sold a Merc SL to German guy. Picked him up from Stanstead at 11pm. He came with pound notes. I checked them and job done and he got the 8am ferry home. Dont be paranoid but remember there are a lot of dodgy 500 euro notes about so I was told.
