Clicking behind the dashboard

There is a clicking noise behind the dashboard while driving. It repeats at intervals of around 5-10seconds! Any one else have this?

do you have a trip counter? If not you'll probably find that the noise occurs every 1/10th of a mile.

If you have a pre-1995 car your mileometer makes the clicking. It's standard.
I test drove a 1994 car and it did this

No trip meter, but makes perfect sense! I knew it would be something logical, afterall it is a TIV

I test drove one that did this (Pre 95) and it wasn't just a click, it was more like the sound of a gun being cocked (movie style).

Do all Pre 95s do it that loud?

I know it sounds silly, but are the doors shut properly? I get a loud clicking from behind L/H dashtop (door locking unit) if doors are not shut properly. Normally at a fast rate but sometimes at 4 or 5 second intervals if just putting pressure onto door card.

is the tripcounter working? maybe it's stuck. try pressing the reset button and see if it helps.

And even if the doors are shut there is a small piece of rubber on the door that lines up with the plunger in the sill, if this has fell off the plunger doesn't go in far enough and even though your door is shut it tells the central locking relay (under the dash) that it isn't

Ah thanks Steve - I thought the sensor was a bit sensitive & meant to look at it to find out why - saved me a bit of head scratching.

Thanks team:

a) 1994 model. No trip, but odometer clicks every tenth of mile. Fair enough. Accepted as the norm.

b) Irrational clicking from dash (behind radio position) – totally random. Plunger on bodywork for internal light not quite depressed enough. Sticky back foam pad on passenger door just enough to ensure internal light working as required with dash noise abolished.
