Hello all,
just picked up my first tvr this weekend, loving it!!
everything was fine on the test drive so i paid him, filled her up and while driving back home on M25 I started noticing whining noise coming from the rear of the car. Sound seems to start about 30mph and goes a bit higher with speed.

can anyone suggest what this could be please. I still havent checked wheel bearings and other bits, but though this could be an know issue.

Cheers,
Peavey

Diff? Especially with the older GKN ones, there tends to be a bit of diff whine...

I often get a high keening sound from the passenger seat.
Should I be worried? biggrin

Might be worth checking your diff and gearbox oil levels too whilst you have it jacked up. When I got mine, my diff oil was a little low. I replaced the oil in diff and gearbox for peace of mind as you never really know when the gear oils were last changed.

my older diff and gearbox make a bit of noise.
seemed to be helped by changing the oil though.

How new are you to TVR? Could it be the fuel pump in the boot? Is it a mechanical whine, or could it be the fuel pump? This confused me for the first month!

This is my first week with TVR, did notice fuel pump was bit loud even while idling. can it be that loud when crusing on motorway!

Suggest you take it back to the dealer if bought from one, or if bought privately, trackmdown a PH member (just ask on here) in your area to come and have a listen. We are a friendly bunch. Or take it to a TVR expert for an opinion. If you were in Norfolk I could help. You seem to be in London - any Londoners with advice?

Did the same when i bought mine.

Found the next day that the diff was whining. Did some research on here and found that the whine can normally be stopped/ reduced a lot by simply changing the diff oil. Got mine done and its a lot quieter.

The diff's on them will always make a slight noise-nature of the beast!

Adam is correct; its what they do. Changing/ topping the oil will help [good luck getting to the drain/ filler plug!], but expect some diff noise with an older Chim. The boot mounted fuel pump may occasionally 'buzz', but this is a different sound completely. Just put your put down and enjoy the other noises!! Cheers, and good luck.

LOL - this thread just made me think "st! I haven't done my dif and 'box oil ever!" and I don't know when it was done before then so I thought I'd ask the guys doing my outrigger at the moment what they'd charge to do it while they have it ... £58 + VAT was the reply along with an apology for it being so expensive but explaining that the oils used are much more expensive than normal engine oils so that's why it's expensive...

... Jesus - When I saw £58 + VAT I thought they were going to say *EACH* ... I'd say that's a bargain. biggrin
