I have the later T5 gbox, and have brought a new standard gearknob to replace the old scratched one.

I assume this just unscrews but cant get it to move at all, any tips - its like it has been welded on

Car comes back from the bodyshop today so would be nice to get the new gearknob on as well

Just get a good firm grip on your ball and TWIST.

I did this yesterday, the ball and shaft tighten against each other like lock nuts.

Cant believe I'm going to say this...

Pull back the sheath then you want one hand on the shaft and one on the top, then put some effort in. If that doesn't work for you (not enough for some), you will need a tool at the bottom.

Wrap a couple of turns of electrical tape around the locking ring below the gear knob to protect it, then use a pair of mole grips to release it.

Is there is a small grub screw going through the underside of the knob that holds it in place. From memory this is a very small Hex head screw and you will probably need a special set of small Allen keys but they are cheap so no problem. (Note I might be getting confused with the door opening knob)

How does the sheath pull down - i assume this is the metal collar under the gknob

It doesn't pull down, it unscrews.

Door opener has a grub screw but my gear knob does not have one.

on mine, the sheath has a machined ali part, which is threaded and locks against the knob. an oil filter wrench worked to undo the knob, but i think it was loctited in situ,

When I said sheath I was talking about the leather. If you pull it down you will see an alloy collar around the shaft.

The collar is also threaded and is tightened against the ball, undo this and the ball will screw off by hand.

yikes nice of you to share

I wouldn't say; "you couldn't make this up!", because you could, however...
I am sure I speak for the majority of the more childish of us who thank you for the considerable opportunity for double entendre and innuendo. biggrin

That's some staying power taking 6 days to pull your knob off - did it go with a pop or was it a slow release?
