Hi guys, my tvr chimaera brake's failed so i have sent it off to the mechanics who has done the following.
changed brake servo (from a used chimaera)
fitted new brake master cylinder(from an xr2i-non abs)
new pads all round
fitted stainless brake hoses to all 4 brakes.
the car keeps leaking air or getting air in the system when the brake pedal is pumped! and my mechanic cant seem to bleed the brakes successfully, and something is obviously wrong but he cant find the problem. has anyone else encountered any similar problems?
the car has been in the workshop for 2 months so needless to say he literally can't stand the sight of my car sitting in the corner anymore so any help will be very well received. thanks for your help.

hi, the servo doesn't seem to be leaking and was removed from a working chimaera. doesn't seem to be loosing brake fluid, just cant bleed them properly!

Are you sure one of the new brake lines isn't sucking air in at one of the joints. I had this happen on the Landy when I changed to braided lines.
Bleed each of the corners and look for the one with the most air in it. Then check that lines joints.

Hi Adam,

I had this problem, I let the fluid get a bit low when doing some brake upgrades. All sorted when I found there was a bleed nipple on the master cylinder.

I re newed the seals in the cylinder and it would not bleed completly, bleeding the bleed nipple on the cylinder fixed it. It is dam difficult to get to to undo and do up again.

I had the same problem after having a new brake master cylinder fitted to my Griff. It turned out to be a faulty master cylinder as fitting a second one cured the problem. You don't know how long they've been sitting on the shelf and the seals can be dry or damaged or ....

Hi guys, thanks for the help thus far! my mechanic is totally stumped with these brakes. i have advised him about the additional bleed nipple on the brake cylander but still no joy. i spoke to him earlier and he said there is some pressure to start with but then the brake fluid rises back into the master cylinder reservior! he wants to take the stainless brakes hoses off and try the original rubber ones again so he can try to isolate them one by one, i have looked for the part numbers and came up with these lucas ghp34 delphi lh1656. they appear to be off a ford cortina mk4/5. i have scoured the internet trying to find the correct part numbers, has anyone replaced the brake hoses. my model is a '96 4.0 chimaera but i'm fairly certian tvr would have kept these all the same regarless of model type. i have suggested i buy another new master cylinder but he wants to try this first so if anyone does know what car there from i'll get them on order, again thanks for your help as i'm eager to get the car back.

i am supprised it has taken so long, yes i think the master cylinder was new 'old' stock and i think the way forward is to buy a new one from tvr tvr/specialist!

Are you sure the hoses were the correct ones?
I got a set once, believing they were for a Griff but they clearly weren't because the end which joins to the hard line was the wrong type - cant remember which now but it crushed the hard line end and closed it.

It's not a bad call by your mech to want to put the old rubber lines back on to prove the problem. If you go down this route get him to have a good look at where the hard line finishes up on the chassis bracket and make sure it's not squashed and the old hoses are compatible with the new hoses you have.

hi, just spoke to my mechanic and he would like to try putting rubber brake hoses on before i buy a new master cylinder so he can isolate each brake to test them. i have an idea what goes on the front (mk4/5 cortina apparently-part no's above) but no idea about the rear. anyone know what ones i need to use as i think most off these will be non-returnable if i purchase them so wanted to get the correct ones. thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.

Why not use these: Braided Brake Hoses

I got a set last year, and they are cheaper than a full set of originals.
At least you can be guaranteed they will fit.

hi, i have purchased a set off the stainless hoses which are currently on the car but i need some off the rubber ones so my mechanic can try and isolate each one. unfortunatley he has thrown my original ones out which i wasn't best pleased about but was an honest mistake!

Of course he wants to crimp them off for the test.
Sorry, I misunderstood.

Don't you just hate those kind of honest mistakes?
The kind that you can't really complain about, but end up costing you anyway.
