6 speed box - what's it all about?
Discussion
Neal and Alex....... just curious, I test drove a Cobra replica with a 5.7 Chevy and Toyota 6 speed box many years ago. It was bloody awful, so much torque the 6 gears were just wasted, it was like conducting an orchestra with a gearstick.... Will you still have the same 1st gear ratio? Is Neals diff change also to get more miles per revs in top? Are the ratios closer than the T5 box? These are the things I need to know
(No I don't coz I can't afford it)
Just curious,

the GM t56 or 6060 box has ratios to suit the LS engine. 1 through 4 are pretty much the same as most american gearboxes, (t5, TKO etc) 5th is around .75, and 6th is around .5.
there are variants of course, but you can run a really short (3.77, 4.08 etc ) diff, for acceleration, and still have a long gear for the blast down to the track.
i agree that some cobs built with other boxes (toyota, getrag etc) can suffer from very short 1st and 2nd gears, not really specced to run behind a torquey v8. i once had a 383 CI chevy (6.3litre 450 ftlb at 2000 rpm ) with a bmw get rag. lovely shift, but very short 1st and 2nd, such that 1st was a parking gear only really, and you used it like a dogleg 1st gearbox.
my favourite cob ran a LS, with a tko 5 speed, .86th 5th, and a long 2.88 diff. that really suited the car, rarely changed gears, and just held torque everywhere. on paper it was very long legged, but to drive it was fantastic. (not a track car though|) I did think about a tko 5 speed and a 3.08 btr diff for my griff....but the 6060 at under a grand swing the argument,
believe it or not, you do use 6th all the time on motorways/autobahns and quite a lot on a roads, the 6 speed is far better than the too which has a 1:1 4th, and a huge jump to .64 5th.
all JMHO of course

DVB8 has changed his diff ratios so it could be a cheap fix if all is well .I still believe my engine could run at 70mph at 2000rpm .Been told someone abraod has a six speed T5 which would be perfect.
Im wondering if the T5 could just have a higher fith gear.
bernie at CTS would be my first call with that queryIm wondering if the T5 could just have a higher fith gear.

The fith gear on the T5 can be higher
It's a gear that's only used for cruising and generally on the motorway.
80mph is about 2200 rpm.
I wonder if the whole gearbox would need rebuilding .
What is the Getrag box, some guy with a Cobra had one fitted to his LS engine ,he said it is a stronger gearbox .

You are the Guru ,what is the Getrag gearbox ?
getrag made lots of gboxes for lots of cars, but they made a version box that was used in manual v12 jags, and a very similair version in 3.5 or 4l manual bmws. it had a detachable bell housing and a remote shifter, so you could easily fit it behind a chevy bell housing with a simple adaptor plate, and also fit a decent clutch plate as the input splines suited, and have the shifter come up through the floor wherever you wanted. very nice gearboxes, low ratios were a little short, so 2.88 or 3.07 rears often fitted with a .85 5th. this was a few years back when you used the jag running gear to build the cob, so the gearbox came "free" if you got the right donor, and even if you didn't, you could pick up the bmw one for £100, and decent manual US gearboxes were like rocking horse doodoo.SSPPGG said:

The BW T5 box is now manufactured by Tremec who also make the TKO 500/600 which, as it suggests, is a beefier (and heavier) version of the T5 so will be a direct swap.
They also make a 6 speed but that requires mods in a TVR as it's longer box.

i dont know of any ls engined guys that have used the getrag, but i might be wrong. any of the cob chaps with a rover just used a rover boxI would love a 6 speed or 5 speed with a higher grear ratio for cruising ,just trying to find the answer.Don`t think there is anything out there for the Rover V8 unless i spend big money.
