Does anyone know whether the horn switch on a chim is used to switch the 12v supply to the horn (with the horn permanently grounded) or is it used to switch a connection to ground to complete the horn circuit with the horn fed with an ignition switched live?

The reason I ask is that my nearside lights are definitely misbehaving still (even though they didn't during the recent MOT) *AND* the horn isn't working and, if the horn button switches the live feed to the horn then I'm suspecting an earth issue that affects both items - anyone know where they're actually earthed? (I'm assuming a common point on the chassis somewhere but where?)

Cheers

Phil

I don't know any of those answers!

But..all I'll say is be careful, as in some Chimaeras the radiator fans work off the same fuse as the horn. Make sure you don't cook it!

Damn! That's it. I was trying to remember which circuit my horn shared with that I had to be careful of when the horn wouldn't work, as I was reading Phil's post.
Certainly 97/98 they shared.

Thanks smile

Luckily, might only be one of the horns though.

That's one of the things I changed a while ago ... my fans no longer run off the original fuse location - they're fed from a new switched live that went in with the new ECU, separately fused and relayed and triggered from the ECU rather than the otter switch now. biggrin

I did check the fuses earlier but this is an intermittent issue (sometimes the horn and nearside dip / main beams work) and I'm really hoping it's just a crappy earth and I can run a few new ones or remake the existing ones...

Cock!

Thanks for the info - that's what I feared - so it can't be a duff earth on the horn then ... but it could be a duff supply or a duff earth on the steering column. biggrin

Oh well - so two separate problems to resolve them ... tralllalllalaa! biggrin

Regarding the Horn issue, my horn started working intermitently. Sometimes it would stop working during a journey.

Eventually I found that the steering column kept loosing it's earth connection so I ran a new one from the one of the body to chassis bolts and it works every time now.

I had a similar fault last night traveling home in the dark my main beam was intermittent, only illuminating when i went over a bump, and my horn stopped working, could this be the earth connection at the front chassis rail?
My dipped beam were fine all the way home.

Trust a thread involving Phil to contain references to his horn being intermittent - isn't that why you bought a TVR Phil, to complete the circuit so to speak.....laugh?

Pfft! I blame it on the trapped nerve in my back - some mornings I reckon I could clap it between a pair of bricks and I wouldn't feel owt...

Anyway - I always said that I'd diet once I could no longer look down and see my old fella ... now I just acknowledge that it's easier to w*nk than diet and it gives me another few years before I need to think about losing weight! biggrin
