You can use something like this, but they aren't as aesthetically pleasing as your solution.

Your MOT inspector doesn't know his job. they are perfectly legal, google is your friend.
Unless that's not a honeycomb plate and the number plate lights can't shine through and illuminate it?If it is then yes the mot tester needs retraining ..... bet he roller brake tested it too?

Is there something documented somewhere which I can print for my next MOT ?
I was also unaware of the issue, and was surprised during my first TVR test when the testers got into the car with some kind of gadget and took it for a short drive. I wondered where they were going! The best I could find is the MOT testers' manual, available to download here, although obviously the test centre should have a copy. Section 3.7 is the relevant bit, which includes the following words:
MOT testers' manual said:
Certain vehicles may not be suitable for testing using a roller brake tester. Testers should take account of the vehicle’s drive configuration, transmission type and any Vehicle Specific Information before deciding whether a full or partial roller brake test is appropriate.
If additional information is available from the vehicle manufacturer, then this should also be taken into account.
Unsuitable vehicles should be tested using a properly calibrated and maintained decelerometer or a plate brake tester designated as acceptable for the statutory tests, see Sub-Section 3.7B and C.
It's not specific about LSDs, but at least this will prove to the tester that there is some truth in what you're saying. Nowadays I always mention the LSD on the phone when I'm booking the test, even with the test centre that seems to know the correct procedure, just to check that they haven't forgotten! If additional information is available from the vehicle manufacturer, then this should also be taken into account.

That mod as useful as it is, is appalling, please remove it and get a proper plate!
Thanks for your advice, I can assure you it was removed as I left the test centre. I thought my title sarcastic was enough!
