Mice update - advice please
Discussion
I have had mice in my Chimaera.
Mainly in two areas, behind the radio and on top of the transmission tunnel.
Loads of chewed wires. Ribbon cables chewed. Rubber gaiters chewed. Leather gaiters chewed.
Not working were: side lights, dipped head lights, full beam headlights (except for flashing them), panel lights, electric windows, speedo, rear fog light,
Leather gaiters on order from Brockwells.
Ribbon cables (for lights and rear fog) ordered and received next day from TVR Power. Installed by me, all lights now work except the dipped headlights.
Other wires soldered by Alex at the weekend.
Speedo cable to be welded tomorrow up on the ramp by my local garage - chewed through just above the gearbox.
ultrasonic mouse scarer installed in car.
Yet to source: rubber gaiters for gear stick and hand brake. - ANY IDEAS?
Puzzle to solve - dipped headlights still don't work. 25 amp fuse was blown, so replaced it. Still no lights. Switched them on with my head near the dipped headlights relay and my hand on it. Could not hear or feel the relay working. Headlight lead near radio (red with green line) was one of the chewed and soldered wires. No idea what to do next other than change the relay - ANY IDEAS?

Above is from racetech the rubber gear stick gaitor......If that helps.
Gary.
Looks like the relay has stuck in the open position when the mice nibbled through the wire, something to do with low voltage passing through it can cause the relay to stick either in open or closed position so I would swap out for another relay to check.

Thanks very much ! I will try both of those ideas.
One thing that did puzzle me - on all the fuse board diagrams, both in the bible and in my own car's handbook, the relays are drawn as being in two rows and with the top row exactly above the bottom one. My dipped head light relay is a top row relay and seems to be a little to one side of the one below it. Also, going by the orientation of the code written on it, it is installed upside down compared with the ones on the row below. Do others find this to be the case? It's the only way it seems to go, but could this muppet have taken it out and put it back upside down? Like all things TVR, it's in a bloody awkward place to reach and work on!

This pic, from Notafinga, is interesting

It shows the fuse board clearly. Not the same layout as mine, but the dipped light relay is orientated differently to the ones below but is definitely lined up properly. My relay is a bit to one side.
I will get out there with my 60 LED cordless inspection lamp ( under a tenner from Aldi) and have another fettle this morning

Don't forget my car is the earlier MK1 and yours is a Mk2 if that's what their called, and the fuseboxes chop & change http://thumbsnap.com/9qW5qJtG

How did they get in ?
First time they got into the heater air intake. So in august my passenger got sprayed with chewed foam and seed husks. This time they climbed up over the gearbox and chewed the gear lever rubber and leather gaiters. Then they also did the same to the handbrake gaiter. 50% of each destroyed.

I remembered that Alex had had a relay out at the weekend, had taken it apart to check it was working (and to show me what it was like) and had asked me which slot it went in to put it back. I looked at the bible and said top row, number two slot from the left.
Yesterday I found one picture which showed a few cars had it in slot 1.
Tried slot one ......... bingo!!!
Also got the car up on a ramp and had the speedo wires released and soldered - about 6 inches of wire (I measured it
) was neatly tied up on top of the diff. Released that and had enough spare to solder. The mice had chewed the wire off where the speedo cable went down through the fibreglass under the sunglasses triangle. Now have a working speedo. I had cut a 22mm core out of the fibreglass to get enough access. I kept the core, and fed it into the wire so that i can seal it back into the hole tomorrow. So now it's just rubber gaiters to source and I can put it back together. I will try Racetech tomorrow.

Put a tray of Warfarin on floor under the car. A 'Hamlin' plague of mice will be coming in from the fields this/every Autumn.
Warfarin tray inside the car, but thanks for the thought. Ultrasonic scarer going back on as soon as I can be arsed to go outside and fiddle with it!Edited by EGB on Thursday 15th November 20:42
Very sorry to hear of this Anthony. The very last thing to exspect. I may think about putting out cat poo tray underneath or better, put the cat in the garage.
Good luck with getting things sorted.

I get them regular in the Griff but luckily only on the boot so far.
Traps are best as you can physically see the numbers reducing. I put the trap with bait (small lump of cheese) on some paper so if theres any blood it is contained. Got 3 or 4 now.
First noticed chunks of the carpet edging gone, and some of my soft stuff (blankets) in teh boot nibbled and it stunk of pi55. Was right in the corner and the smell lasted for ages.
Good luck.
Do you know how they are getting in? - boot seal, door seal, door glass not sealing with roof well, bulkhead gap, holes under the boot?

I have worried about this and this thread has made it worse
We get them on a regular basis. I guess I could try and stop them getting in but we have a double garage with gaps round both doors.
Going to get one of these
