Top End Rattle

Hi

I've noticed on a few different occasions that I'm getting a lot of rattling from the tappets.

One time cruising the mighty M62 at about 80-90 it started and also if I plant my foot, overtaking etc, then once I've calmed down to normal speed the rattling starts again.

After a couple of minutes of saving petrol and the environment the rattle stops.

It sounds like the oil pump can't cope or something, and yes I have full sump of Mobil1 motorsport 15/40w stuff. It's a Chim 450 BTW.

Has anyone else experienced this? or have any clue as to what could cause this?

The engine is more quantity sensitive than pressure sensitive, as alot of the upper engine is splash fed. Aslong as you have a full dipstick and the oil pressure is not falling below about 15psi at idle, then I dont think its an oil pump problem. Its more likley to be the hydralic tappets in the engine getting worn.

I am getting good oil pressure 30+ when driving and around 15 on idle.

So I'm suspecting it's not good news if the tappets are on the way out?

Probably just a lazy tappet. I had one and it sounded awful while accelerating in tunnels but I had her serviced by Austec (top guys! many thanks) and that put some additive in the oil and now she is all quiet up there again

What additive?

No idea what it was. You could hear the tappet from their reception (they heard me pull up!) 7 hrs later (6000 mile service and rolling road) and no noise.

Mines very ticky, but mainly over 4000rpm. The rolling road showed peak torque at 3929 (270lb/ft).

5000rpm is strictly for 5th gear now.

I do have a service in the next week or two though which will probably involve checikng the exhaust manifolds and the engine mounts.
