4.0 and 4.0HC difference?

Double valve springs it might have a vernier timing set ..
Re-Double Springs..........NOPE.Most 4 Ltr and I use the term loosely, from 1993 onwards had double valve springs, it is NOT an indication of an HC engine (whatever that really is!!).
I would hazard a guess that valve size is the factor and a lot of head-work and a really good cam before you approach 250 plus, let alone 280 on a 4-ltd.
All IMHO and I am sure lots more contributions will appear.
Trv
My engine is as above
you will have to be serious about getting 280 BHP out of a road going 4.0
with little leeway to get wrong or it will make for a nasty drive, decent modified heads and intake will play dividends rather than just a balls out cam as TVR fitted (500 spec)
if you drive a healthy 4.0 against a healthy 4.0HC you will see what I mean the HC is as flat as a nuns tit below 3k, looking at it from TVR's view it was probably cheaper to stick in the bumpy cam rather than fitting decent heads which would of give a better result
just out of curiosity the HC makes no where near 275 BHP though

Are you flogging a dead horse with there little 4l motors
LOL - that's just mean..
I suspect that as with many things TVR the differences that MAY have been documented (i.e. bigger valves, double springs, lumpy cam etc) got "blurred" as TVR had the habit of fitting whatever they had to hand....and then later to just use that as the norm..
I was really keen to find either a 4.3 or a 4.0HC when I was looking, instead I bought "just" a lowly 4.0.. but I really would like to try a HC at some stage as I don't find anything lacking in the performance area and it has a good spread of torque but freely revs up much higher than I had expected..... I know the guages are notoriously inaccurate but mine revs beyond 6500 if I want it to (not that I really do) so either the rev limiter has been changed or the gauge is off...
I think the 4.0 is a good basis for the turbo conversion, so that's on my "to do" list...
Im only asking as im currently in the market for a chim, and im worried that im going to get bored of the power on offer quite quick.
I did when i had a 4.3 griff nearly 10 years ago. But ive scratched the cerb itch since then and im not quite as power hungry as back then.
That said, less than 240bhp from a 4.0 might not keep me amused for a year, let alone make it a keeper. Maybe a 4.5 or even a 5 might be the way forward.
I just dont want to find myself in a position of having to sell in a years time in the quest for more ooomph....

OP
If you're already asking that question then you've probably already answered it...
I find the available power perfectly adequate... It'll light the tyres up whenever you want (if that's your sort of thing), drift around roundabouts and out accelerate most things you'll meet on the road on your commute.
But if you really want ~280HP you're better off looking elsewhere as it'd be expensive to get that from a 4.0 and TBH it wouldn't be a 4.0 by the time you've achieved it.
If you feel the need for that power buy a 500....but even then you may struggle to see that power on a dyno..
Just out of interest what have you got against Turbos? Not that it'd be any cheaper to buy a 4.0 then turbo it than it would be to buy a 5.0...

Think ill hold out for a 4.5/5.0
Ive nothing at all against turbo charging at all. Love it in fact. But im a tvr purist, and believe in keeping the heart of a car the way it was intended. So ill stick with natural aspiration. Plus turbos rob the exhaust of some of its burble. Which is one of the things i love most about a tvr.
you can also make a 4.6 from the 4.0, its got the same bore I guess>>

Except lots of TVR 4.0's are what others call 3.9's... ie small journal blocks & cranks.
I thought my 97 400 would be a 4.0 not 3.9??! Im on original cam at 44k miles
in theory you should have the 4.0 X bolter in there but you know what these cars are like nothing is set in stone
mines a late 95 and has the 3.9 as Spend referred too

I see you've previously had a 4.5 Cerb I did when i had a 4.3 griff nearly 10 years ago. But ive scratched the cerb itch since then and im not quite as power hungry as back then.

You do say you're not 'quite as power hungry as back then'...... As for being kept ammused, this is obviously a very subjective thing coz I can keep myself ammused in my daily hack just coz it's fun to drive, not seriously quick... Anyway, if having fun driving is all about just you and the car and nothing else then I would have thought a 4.0 Chim would fulfil that role with room to spare
All I would say is, if being blown away on a regular daily basis by the average 3.0 diesel barge (BMW/Audi etc etc) will not in any way leave you frustrated or detract from the fun you have in a 4.0 Chim then get one
Something tells me however that that probably isn't you

You're right. If a diesel barge will leave a 4.0 for dust, its not really for me

Need to show the oilies a clean pair of heels now and then. Just for kicks you understand
Does the 4 have enough torque to light the rears up for some impromptu roundabout drifting, in the dry?
