Starter Motor - How accessible?
Discussion
Is it easy enough to get at the starter motor on a chim?
For the second time now I've had a jammed starter motor this evening ... There was a clunk when I hit the "starter" position on the ignition and a definite current drain that showed it was trying to do something.
Eventually it did decide to free itself but I'm guessing that it's time to replace.

hi Phil
Just changed my last weekend, without to much issue.
Getting to stater motor isn't to bad as long as you get a car jacket high enough, or even on a ramp. You will be able to access the starter motor, you will need a hex 8 sized allen key and a size 14m socket head (i think that was the size didn't really look just pick one until it fitted)to remove the battery cable form the starter motor. Don't forgot to disconnect the battary before you even start.

Where did you get your starter from?
I was thinking of grabbing one of these....

I've had three starters before I found a good one:
1: PowerLite:
http://www.powerlite-units.co.uk/pdf/starters/RAC3...
Well marketed, very very expensive, sounds wrong when it engages = Total rubbish & straight back on E-Bay
2: Prestolite:
From Brookwells.
http://www.brookwell.co.uk/
Great while it lasted, but yes you guessed it, it didn't last
3) Global Power:
Ebay ad shows what looks like a Prestolite starter but what they sent me was branded Global Power.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-CLASSIC-3-5-...
Best starter I've had by far, & the cheapest

Got the Powerlite (ordered one for assessment purposes when the solenoid on the original unit failed) - yes it does sound 'different' when engaging, which was a concern of mine (and the guys that installed it) initially...
BUT it has worked perfectly for the past 2 years, turns the engine over a fair bit more easily than the Lucas one did, weighs less than half of what the old unit brings on the scales and only draws half the current, too -> which in turn means you don't have to bother with the 'hot start' mod. It cost no more than I would have paid for a standard rebuilt unit here. The lower current draw also meant I could get away with a smaller AGM battery for weight and passenger leg space, and still be able to start the car after several weeks.
Win-win-win as far as I'm concerned.

Having had all three I don't want to burst your bubble but the Global Power one weighs more or less the same as the expensive Powerlite one, as does the Prestolite.BUT it has worked perfectly for the past 2 years, turns the engine over a fair bit more easily than the Lucas one did, weighs less than half of what the old unit brings on the scales and only draws half the current, too -> which in turn means you don't have to bother with the 'hot start' mod. And the Global Power one cranks better than any of them.
Powerlite have a great marketing team though.
I freely admit I got sucked in by the marketing hype from Powerlite, but when it arrived I could see why they push these starters so hard, quite simply there's lots of profit in them.
Why, well because it's just a Denso starter like I used to fit to Toyota fork lift truck engines & the like.
Anyone familiar with light commercials & plant will know the Denso starter I mean, it's fitted to loads of stuff & has been for donkeys years.
All three starter's I've tried are gear reduction, there's nothing special about the Powerlite product in this respect either.
I discussed the Denso similarities with a mate of mine in the trade & he laughed, then he gave me a long list of companies that are re-branding Denso starters with end plate conversions for a multitude of different applications.
Al these companies do is take a stock £60.00 Denso starter (£50 trade bought in bulk), remove the standard end plate, fit a conversion end plate for the given application, then sell it to the public for £200.00.
No wonder there are lots of companies doing it, & no wonder they can afford to spend loads of marketing hype.
With over 200% margin in every sale, I might even get into it myself

Mine sounded different sure, but not in a good way, believe me I know what a starter should sound like, I've fitted hundreds on a multitude of vehicles.
Trust me, it's a wrongun, and it's because the Denso throw is wrong for the RV8, after a few years it'll eat the ring gear, mark my words.
£200.00 for a starter with the wrong throw that'll mean removing your gearbox & flywheel in a few years aint a good deal to me.
Especially when you can buy a Global Power starter that works better, & for just £75.00 delivered to your door.
Don't get sucked in by Powerlite's current drain hype either, I did a voltage drop test on all three (Prestolite, Global Power & Powerlite) and they were all within a gnats cock of each other.
If you want better cranking, ditch the feeble 7 foot starter cable TVR fitted and put something beefier in instead, then make up a short run from your battery neg terminal direct to the engine block.

It'll make a much much bigger difference than any starter motor could ever hope to deliver.
