Chaps. I am going to fit a new cam over winter. The one in situ appears to be original and if the 70,000 miles the car is beleived to have done is genuine then a new cam is in order. I will be replacing the clutch and putting in a lightened fly wheel at the same time by a family member who is a mechanic and has just put together a 1200 bhp Skyline and as such I can be confident in his mechanical skills. I have sourced the clutch and fly wheel from JE engineering but im stumped as to which cam to put in. I see alot recommend the stealth cams but as the work is being done by myself...so to speak, this would open a wider variety of cams to choose from and save a few pennies at the same time. The car is a 96 4.0 none HC and track days are not at the top of my agenda but the odd spirited drive is.

Sound good but I'd stick with an original cam unless you want to spend out on some re mapping. yes

Have a read down this page. Some of the popular cams are mentioned.

All depends really how you like your engine. Power low down or high up the rev range.

The MC1 cam has good mid range power and will give you low speed manners ,don`t know if it`s true but it`s a decent cam for super charging and Turbos ..

I had the MC1 fitted in my old 4l and i was very happy with it !

The 14cux can handle this cam without re mapping .

Blitz can explain this but it`s above me .

Mc1 good idle, excellent drive ability, reasonable bhp.
Mc2 poor ish idle, poor ish driveability good mid range, good bhp.
H404 very poor idle, crap driveability, good mid range, excellent bhp
Stealth very good idle, very good drive ability, ok ish mid range, good bhp.
Piper 270 ok idle good mid range crap bhp
Piper 285 crap idle, poor drive ability, very good mid range, ok bhp, falls off the cam very quickly
Piper 300 crap idle crap drive ok mid range good bhp
Kent 200 very good idle good drive poor every where else
218 good idle good drive good mid range poor bhp
214 ok idle ok drive ok mid range ok bhp
224 poor idle, poor drive, good mid range, good bhp
234 crap idle crap drive, good mid range, excellent bhp,

I had a custom grind by Rob at v8d
Solid lifters etc I loved it, massive kick at 3500rpm but its not for every one

I've yet to hear a bad word about V8D's stealth and real steels typhoon

Daz, thats some great info you have there. I take it the list is all tried and tested? I didnt realise you would need to remap the lucas by changing cams, I must add I have no intention at present in changing the lucas/dizzy set up.

If you still have the correct HC cam fitted then your already around the Piper 285 region, which is not considered mild for the 4.0L and easily bettered by a good all rounder speak to V8D, John Eales or Realsteel for advice, you should have the notched pistons fitted so you can stay lairy if needs be, personally i like Gas Monkeys take on the matter, but that would not suit many .

I remap or Ecu is recommended but not needed,

Me and phazed managed to get the 14cux working with fancy cams, you can play with the afm and fuel pressures to get it fairy close,

Only problem I had was the cold start but my cam was quite big

Interesting. First I need to find out if I have 'pocket pistons' I guess as my Chim is the standard 4.0 and not the HC. I dont really want to start changing pistons out.

Get a bore scope down the plug holes it's the only way to be 100% sure

sorry misread your post (smartphone) and missed the NON before the HC so that does limit your choice for lairy but you still have plenty to choose from.

I will report back once I have found out about the pistons, then we will have a true idea what can be installed.

If its non HC you wont have the valve cutouts in the pistons, but you could always check with a borescope.

The V8 developments MC1 cam will work fine with the 14cux ,great allrounder with good instant power to mid range .

Got all the above from this site ..

I just had mine done by Andy Mcloughlin in Passfield using the MC1 and glad I didn't try something else. It runs very smooth now and with more power.

For what its worth I have tried a few cams in my old Chimaera's there seem pros and cons with all of them, its teh mapping/chip which makes the most difference, had tried various chips with teh 14 cux this all seemed a compromise, stand alone is teh way to go, in my cae I used the Autronic SM 4, not the easiest to map (took 3 differnt people to get it right) but when done was sensational

Got a borescope on route from fleabay, as soon as it arrives I will take a look at the pistons then hopefully we can narrow the cam choice down, one way or another.

I read somewhere on one of Blitzracing threads,he said the 14cux can compensate by 20%. The MC1 cam will work well with the standard chip .

V8BOB fitted the MC1 cam him self and found that you don`t even need an adjustable timing gear set for the MC1 cam, so its not that far different to the one fitted in the TVR factory .
