What contols the cooling fans please?
Discussion
According to the Rovergauge s/w, my fans are coming on at 96/97 and going off at 91/92. According to the temp gauge, it is about 10 degrees cooler than this.
Car runs fine, no over heating or anything but I wondered if this an acceptable cut in/out temperature and where the fan gets its controls from?
Thanks in advance
Graham

Fan/fans get controlled from the otter switch, located in, either the side of the swirl tank, or in the rad, depending on what year car.
92 on and 88 off is a typical range, but there are many variants of the otter switch, each with different range of temp on and temp off.
If your car has no cooling/overheating probs, and the fans switch as they should, then all is fine.

That's very similar to mine, and by design.Car runs fine, no over heating or anything but I wondered if this an acceptable cut in/out temperature and where the fan gets its controls from?

My Canems software shows the car idles at an absolute momentary maximum of 98 degrees on a very hot day, but this is an exception, the fans tipically keep it idling at 95.
At speed it sits a little lower at at a true 88 on a cold day & 90 degrees on a warmer day, but always back to a nicely regulated 95 at idle.
I've tuned my temp gauge using the Range Rover sender & a variable resistor to show 10 degrees below the true coolant temperature just because it suits the gauge scale better that way, & it's easy for me to add 10

The car never overheats and the heater is also very effective, some will tell you I'm running it a bit hot, but I suspect most Chims showing 80 - 85 degrees or less on the TVR gauge are actually running about 10 degrees hotter.
When you think Range Rovers with this engine were configured to run at 110 degrees my 88 - 95 degrees is quite conservative & safe.
In sumary what you are seeing on the Rovergauge software is correct & perfectly normal, what you see on the TVR temp gauge is another story & far from reliable.
I'd trust your Rovergauge, it's using the ECU sensor afterall just like my Canems engine management system, & that sensor sits nicely in the water flow, unlike the TVR temp gauge sender.
Thanks both. I spent some time trying to get my heater working a bit more effectively today. There seemed to be a bit of air in the system when I jacked the front up to fill but the best improvement came from finding a broken joint in the fresh air pipe feeding the side of the dashboard on the drivers side!
2 degrees, roof off, fan on mid setting and warm legs at 50 mph. Not as hot as my old Stag heater but a lot better than when I first got it!
Looking through the log files I saved, both today and when I first got the program the car is running in the mid 80s when the gauge is showing 70 ish. Next time I will see how long it takes to get to working temperature from cold.
