Hi folks

Don't worry, I'm not selling up. But the car is going to TVRSS in January for a few bits and bobs and while it's there I've decided to do some stuff that was mentioned in last years MOT.

I've got to do the rear brake discs, so I thought I may as well do the pads and get some braided lines at the same time. Actually, I may as well do the front as well.

I've been looking at Clever Trevor, here, I quite fancy the 260mm fronts discs and standard rear. But on both of these the description says 'Chimaera 500 brakes' - I am slightly confused, does this mean they wont fit my '98 450 or does it mean it will upgrade to 500 spec?

Also, what pads should I get and is having braided lines worth it? I do not do track days (at the moment) and do not drive the car hard. Although I think this is due to me still not being 100% confident in what the car can do, it's a steep learning curve and I don't fancy getting it wrong.

Nick

and found the stuff I need, qu

Job done, time to hammer the card once more thumbup

Just to confirm, 260mm front discs, will they fit on my standard calipers and behind 15inch Estorils?

I would go standard size discs none drilled/grooved as in my experience, as limited as it is, drilled/grooved only give you more pad wear and noisy brakes. Use your upgrade on pads and brake fluid, something like ATE super blue racing fluid.

Now I'm really confused confused

Looks like I already have 260mm discs so that sorts that question out. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong smile

As I said I don't track it or drive her hard. Is it worth paying more than double the price for drilled and grooved?

Like I say mate...In my experience drilled and groved is not worth it. Instead spend the money on uprated pads and decent brake fluid.

Yes, you have the 260MM Brakes.
For a firmer feel to the pedal then braided hoses are the way to go. Personally I would (and have ) upgraded to grooved only, which has improved the braking in my opinion.

What discs and pads have you got, if you don't mind me asking?

I've seen Black Diamond Vented and Grooved for just over £100 per pair. Seems rather reasonable but i can only find 2 fitments listed. 500 post '99 and 400 '93-'98, no 450 listed.

Well some of its right!
Pads and fluid make a massive difference and braided hoses will also help.
Most TVRs are not heavy enough to cause problems with drilled discs, If you want good stopping power drilled or grooved will do. If you do track work then get some good pads.
imho and experience grooved discs or Alcon type j hook offer best performance with decent pads and hoses.
Experience based on ownership of T350, Sagaris x 2, Cerbera, Tamora, GTR, CSL and two quick scoobies.
Grooved with some decent pads and hoses is my recommendation for you Sir.

Standard 400 Chim here. In the summer I fitted Yokoama dry weather tyres. Not 888s, but grippier than standard fare. I discovered on a track weekend that the tyres and standard brakes were almost exactly equal, ie under really hard braking I could not quite lock up the brakes. This tells me that the standard brakes are more than fit for purpose, so don't change them.

OP, take your car on an airfield track day next year. You can test the limits without testing the Armco. Nothing to hit, and I found that I gained a lot of confidence in how the car behaved after spinning it four times at speed.....

Ask the same question to someone who has upgraded then you will get a different answer ..

I changed the rear solid discs ,changed the hubs(cosworth brakers) and fitted new rear calipers from fleabay for very little money . I now have the later Chimaera rear brake setup ,then lauched the front brakes and purchased the Cossie upgrade ,ok a bit heavy but they are like night and day ,made the original setup perthetic .

There are far better uogrades out there but for the money it was worth doing ..

You can sell your rear calipers, cariers, hubs to a S owenr who wants to upgrade ,it`s a bolt on job for them ..

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions chaps thumbup

After much thought and working on the theory that it's better tp upgrade rather than replace, I've decided to go for the Black Diamond Grooved and vented discs all round.

A few final questions though, sorry if I seem quite daft, but the truth is I am. This is my first 'proper' car as well as my first foray into modifying, I want to get it right from the start smile We're all here to give advise as well as learn after all... if anyone needs to know any Swedish or what's the best way to cook a meatball I'd be more than happy to advise biggrin

Is it always worth buying the matching pads to go with the discs? If not then can you suggest whicy ones to go for.

Also, I am rather confused at the websites way of listing the discs, could someone please tell me exactly which ones I should order. The 4.0 ones are within my cars age range but wrong engine. The 4.5 and 5.0 ones are listed as '99 onwards confused

I had EBC grooved discs and greenstuff brake pads installed by the old Leven Technology some years ago. The pads have done 25k miles and Dan Taylor (who now has his own magnificent business in Aylesford which I frequent, frequently!) is of the opinion that they have another 20 - 30k left. Maybe it's my driving but they really are good!

One thing of which you should be aware before you buy (if you decided to go ahead) is that the wheels make a sort of clicking noise due to the grooves in the disc. For me it is of no consequence but to others it might irritate. It is certainly more noticeable immediately they are fitted. The way around it is to drive with the window closed (bad move!) or keep the revs up to drown out the noise!
