A few weeks ago, I started to notice that in stop-start traffic the clutch in my '99 4.0 Chimaera felt like it was grinding metal on metal toward the bottom end of the clutch travel. I forgot about it for a while, then today, took it for a little drive and noticed that when pressing the clutch pedal in, you can hear and feel through the pedal a metallic clonk at the bottom end of the travel. It's as though something metal is hitting and then sliding along something else.

A quick look in the Bible and it looks like the above translates in the push rod connected to the back of the pedal is hitting something in the master cylinder? Not sure how likely that is.

Has anyone come across anything similar? The car seems to drive just fine, gears engage/disengage normally.

Thanks

In case anyone else ever has a similar problem - it turned out to be something very simple.

The nut on the back of the pedal which allows adjustment had come ever so slightly lose and the pedal had turned enough to contact the steering rack at the bottom of its travel. It had worn through the rubber, and down to the metal, hence the feel and the noise.

Thanks Fernhurst for the quick and easy fix. Probably should have had a look with a torch myself...
