Okay, I've been reading through the forums and various web sites. I'm wiser, but still clueless...

I have a standard 500 and it turns out 275 BHP. I'd like to get this around 320. Like everything, one person suggests something and then somebody else disagrees. Without the obvious and really expensive mods, such as turbos and heavily re-modded heads what would be the best way to begin approaching this figure and what bolt-on parts would you suggest?

So for example, if I was to look at the induction system, where would you start, where would you spend, where would you save and when would you move on? What would you do next after the induction?

What mods are good and what aren't so good? Do chips work or don't they?

Cheers
Chris

This one should run and run.
;D

All depends how much you want to spend obviously but just with regards to induction you need the ACT smooth inlet pipe & elbow, better flowing air filter, 72mm plenum, carbon trumpet base and trumpets and a larger AFM if you're keeping the Lucas. If you're keeping the Lucas you need to speak to Mark Adams (Tornado chip) and you'll probably need bigger injectors.

If not keeping the Lucas then the AFM can be replaced by a length of alloy pipe with the air sensor for something like an Omex, Emerald or Measquirt or any of the other ECU's to replace the Lucas for the fuelling.

Those are the bits on my car and the RR figures after showed just 301 bhp

I'll leave it to everyone else to argue about the other bits to give you the other 20 bhp (that might be the really expensive bit)

Hi Chris, the 500 will already have the larger inlet manifold, trumpets & big valve heads so all you should need to do to get around 300 horses is to ditch the plenum top & AFM for something larger. 72mm plenum & the Bosch AFM mapped by Mark Adams will do it, or as said above go emerald/MS etc.
Not too difficult on a 500. Makes you wonder why they didn't do it from the factory really. thumbup

Here's the standard AFM, (on the right, 5AM) compaired to the Bosch, & Gems. You can see a big difference in internal diameter.....

Without a doubt - ditch the clockwork Lucas setup. As said you have the headwork done so a management system that can map not just fuel but spark as well will make the very best of what you already have.

I would fit the ACT full induction kit ,large K&N airfilter and maybe go for the 72mm plenum then see how it goes ,if your worried about spending leave it at that ..At this piont you don`t need a remap.

If your car is running nicely it`s a difficult decission ,"sometimes a nice running car is better than more horses" !

Okay, thanks for all the input.

So in general, the cheapest way to go: ACT smooth bore inlet and elbow, together with a decent air filter. I should then consider the AFM and perhaps the Mark Adam's chip.

I've also read about shortened trumpets etc. Does this make a big difference? I also intend to get the pre-cats out at some point, so I assume that this should help?

I need to check with Austec to ascertain exactly what was done to the heads etc back in 2009. I'm assuming that they refitted a standard cam. See below:

Would be interesting to know how the v8 came out the factory..Did it have a 72mm inlet ,45mm trumpet base and port matched inlet manifold !At what stage are the 5l heads ported ?etc etc .

Don`think you should spend any money untill you have done some research..Im not sure if you need the Mark Adams chip by changing the AFM ,Blitz will explain all that for you ..

If you just want better throttle responce more torque you may be happy at that .You have to condisder the weak crank in the 5l !

Will these larger AFMs simply swap with standard AFM and plug-in to the existing connections?

My act made no difference,

You want proper bhp per £ you want to decatt it fully and make sure the ignition and fueling is set as well as the stock system will allow

I made 30bhp doing this

No standard cars came out of the factory with 72mm plenums they were just standard Rover items along with the rubbish spin drier inlet hose and sawn off scaffolding inlet trumpets.

If it were me I would first fit a more modern management system with knock sensors etc as this would allow you to advance the timing as much as possible.

I guess removing the cats on a 500 would be the biggest single cheap gain.

After that I'd look at some of the air flow options.

I would think those things would amount to reasonable gains before looking at the engine itself?

The easiest gains we made on mine were remapping the ignition on coil packs. That was on a car already running after market ecu but still running a locked dissy and a little nit of ecu control.

Some of the racers are seeing 400 on 5 ltr motors and one is aiming for 450 on 5.2 john eales/ ta heads motor!

Mine which still uses a stock tvr 500 bottom end, solid lifters, lot of head work and tb's makes 370 on full power map

Driver Training, will make best use of you 'mere' 275bhp, and is transferable to an y other vehicle. Not a popular choice as has no bar room bragging rights associated with it!

I'll give Austec a call after Xmas and see if they can give me any more info. I'd like to get in touch the previous owner, but I'm unable to trace at the moment.

Money is currently a limitation, having just bought the car, which is why I was looking at induction and perhaps pre-cat removal. I've looked at the dizzyless ignition, such as Megasquirt, Canems etc, but it looks a little too specialist and I don't have the experience to get the most out of it. I'd also have to purchase a PC laptop to tune it headache It's easy to get carried away and bills can quickly mount up!

As for the Cerbera, yes I looked at them. They are gorgeous. It is what I originally started out looking at. I particularly liked the 4.2 and 4.5. But then I looked at the running costs of the AJP and the overall running costs of the Cerb and decided against it. However, I'm happy with my Chim. It sounds awesome and is addictive to drive... the grass is always greener and all that... rolleyes As for advanced driving, skid-pan would be good, although, I've had my fair share of RWD cars and go easy around corners, especially in the wet!

So back to basics... does the plenum come with 72mm trumpets as standard on the 500? Looking at the receipt, I should imagine that the exhaust is probably and Offord system, but not sure what has been done to the heads or what type of cam has been installed. The induction looks pretty standard. Will the Tornado chip make a huge difference or is there other alternatives I should look at? As for the ACT Y-piece, is it worth just getting a standard Y-piece and removing the cat (with the inevitable swap over at MOT time)?

Lots to take in!

At the risk of being controversial here...

...why not leave it as it is for a while until you can afford to do some "proper" work on it? You may even decide that you don't need more grunt. biggrin

If it runs nice justt fit the ACT full induction kit and K&N airfilter ..

If it aint broke leave it .. it ! Stick some petrol in and enjoy and forget the Marks Adams best guess map ..

happy driving cool

Does it not feel fast enough ?
