Heater matrix pipes routing
Discussion
That certainly not standard, someone's removed the original metal pipes

I have since remove all the metal pipes and just have silicone going straight across

It's an early car!!!
All had the fuse box on the floor & battery up in the footwell.
The link pipes are also different as they go over the battery box (higher & deeper than the later cars). Also they have a proper heater bypass valve
~ and unlike the OP's picture it is fitted (closer to the matrix) between the link pipes & the matrix (Its that funny 'H' section that looks like a double link).
Wire bound silicone hose is an easy way to replace them BTW, more expensive than hose but easy to use/form.

Hiya Spend! All had the fuse box on the floor & battery up in the footwell.
Mine's a '94 (which I class as an "early" car myself) and has the recessed square cubby in the footwell and my fusebox is mounted in there. The battery was then sat on the floor (in a battery box) pushed up against the bulkhead so I've always assumed that the recessed cubby (that annoyingly pokes out into the wheelarch) was for the fuseboard ... if that's not the case then what's it for?
Every day's a schoolday!

Cheers
Phil
The half box (there is a slanted front cover ~ commonly missing) is for the battery. Fitted to all the early cars that have that step in the wheelarch - thats why you need to be careful with tyre selection on early cars (many cut into that step).
TBH I chopped mine out & converted to later style battery on floor & fusebox above, as well as cutting the step out of the wheelarch. It's one of the few improvements that was made with the later cars (all the extra electric rubbish is a waste of time IMHO). Many do it because of water ingress, but for me the lowering of weight (hence CoG) was the determining factor.
The OP wasn't asking about modifications to that extent though the way I read the question.

That's right for the battery cover plus fusebox battery location, but to avoid confusion the Griff heater motor is err Griff specific. In addition the side of the footwell is different with the Chim recirc flap (covering blower motor whereas Griff of that era its prob in the front wing).Just think of all the early car owners who've been madly undoing bolts through the floor due to insistent PH'ers advice... never mind sent on wild goose chases for 100amp fuses

So what battery was on the "old" chims then to fit in that little cubby? Mine was an 072 (or 075) type and there's no way in hell it would ever have fitted up there but it would be nice to cut out and get rid of that protrusion into the wheelarch!

Just as well I've moved the fuse box behind the passenger seat as I have rainwater getting in the footwell
Yup - I get a lot of water in the footwells too ... so much so that it soaks the back of my trousers legs as I'm driving, but the fusebox is about six inches up off the floor so I'm not too worried.
