Hi again folks

Got a lovely box of brake bits last week, new discs and pads all round as well as braided lines. A couple of questions if I may....

1. Is this a job for a TVR specialist, and associated TVR Tax? biggrin Or can a 'normal' mechanic do it?

2. Do I paint my calipers? I'm thinking blue to match the engine bay bits... or will it just look complete tosh? I realise this is a personal thing but I was just interested to know the general thoughts on this look.

Ummmmm.... That's a DIY job.. There's no need to pay ANY mechanic to do anything that easy... and besides I always prefer to work on my own brakes, that way I know they have been done properly.

You can buy calliper paint in Halfrauds amongst other places..

Depends if you want or need new pistons and seals. If buying second hand parts, I want them replaced.

The higher spec coatings that BR offer are very hard wearing - more than can be said for the painted options I've tried in the past.

I wouldn't trust myself on a job that involved brakes, I am in no way the spannering type apart from the most basic of jobs. I would love to learn and always ask my local 'man' if I can watch him work on my cars.

You have tempted me with BiggRed but that would be another £300+ and the calipers are fine, as far as I know. May leave them as they are and when time comes to replace I'll have them done properly by BiggRed or similar.

Had the Griff fronts do e recently (888 / 887 calipers) and pretty sure there was change from £200...

I would paint them if you rub them down well you get a good finish and it tidies them up well

The brakes on the Chim are simple enough to do yourself, just take your time and get everything yo need before you start.
The rear brake lines are near-on impossible to undo from the chassis with normal length spanners or socket sets, a set of short handled spanners will save you a lot of trouble. Also one of the alun bolts on the rear carriers is not accessible because the hub upright fouls it, a set of mole grips will be your friend here. It is just a personal thing, but I painted my callipers with high temp metallic silver paint. They are visible through the alloys and make it look like new/standard without going over the top.
Finally do not forget to put that lock-tight stuff on the hexi bolts when you bolt the carriers back on otherwise you will be collecting them from the side of the M6 and will probably take 2 miles to stop (if you get my drift)!
