Hi all and hope you all had a good Christmas, smile
I am wanting to buy a sat nav for the chim, and not sure what to go for reference size and volume.
Budget is about £130 and have seen the garmin 2595 for that price. I just wanted some thoughts, opinions and advice as this is my first one(other cars were factory fit).
Also where is the best place to fit another cig lighter socket?, i was thinking in between the window swithes.
Cheers Jamie
( i have asked in the sat nav forum but no replies, so thought would post here as i know ill get an answer even if it is only "fk off". lol

I had my sat nav go down, dawned on me I could upgrade to an iPhone and buy excellent tom tom app. For less than a new sat nav? Used it for a year now, it's great and I can even answer the phone???? I'd recommend it, less leads wrapping round your wheel etc, in fact I'm thinking of a stereo that simply allows a connection, the phone provides the rest. You know like a blanking panel, subtle cool. Lol.

I also use a new VW transporter van, my sat nav is better than the vans! At the time my app was about £30 not sure what it costs now?

I have a tom tom live satnav and for me, who travels 40k miles per year,(Sadly not in the TVR!) the live function has helped me avoid long motorway traffic jams/closures. I use a Brodit cradle for the satnav which also has a hard wired charger with it so you don't have wires all over the place!

I have used an iPhone with TomTom for a number of years now ... currently using an iPhone 5 in a Brodit holder and I hard wired in a 12v to 5v USB charger behind the dash so no cables showing.

Have had no issues with it that make me think I should have done differently. biggrin

I've been using copilot live on my Android phone for some time now and found it as good as any purpose built sat nav. Just upgraded to latest edition. On offer at moment for £19.99 including western europe mapping. I fitted a triple socket adapter on an aluminium plate fitted underneath the passenger side dash fed from the battery. get a good screen mount and you're good to go.

Thankyou all for your comments, all are taken on board and it makes a good case for Phones with apps.
Looks like i'm going to carphone warehouse rather than halfrauds or maplin.
We wish you a Happy New Year and a wonderful 2013, Hope the petrol flows freely and May the Hooning be joyous and trouble free
Many thanks once again
Jamie
PS, Phil, If those relays are up for grabs, how much would you like for them?

The fuel pump relays? Jesus you can have em if they're still on what's left of the old loom - I'll try to get down to the garage this afternoon if the rain eases off and have a look...

I did exactly that on my old 500. Worked a treat and looked the dogs. I mounted the holder so the tomtom obscured the clock somewhat but there's a clock on the tomtom anyhooo. Ran the power wire out the top of the radio panel strip of leather.

Right, had to go lob a bag of rubbish in the bin so had another reason to brave the monsoon!

OK - two new style brown Bosch relays rescued from the remnants of the old loom ... probably had less than a months use. biggrin

Just PM me your address and I'll get 'em in the post to you...

I think I also have a couple of (used) sets of Magnecore's ... definitely have at least one but I think the second set might have a burned "number 8" lead from where a plug extender went limp and let the lead droop against the manifold. Have a couple of good 14CUX ECUs too (with 4.0HC EPROMs in them).

Slight aside here but I use a Tom Tom in the Chimaera and damned if I can hear the thing, especially the 'safety camera' warnings. When the roof is off I have no chance. Anyone know a way around this.eg feed into speakers?

Apologies to OP if seems like hijack but might colour your decision.

My TomTom has Bluetooth output that I use on my bike and in the TVR, my radio has a Bluetooth input.

Having said that I downloaded the TomTom app for my phone and use that now, again via Bluetooth to the stereo.

No appologies needed as speed camera warnings are something that a dedicated tvr owner surely needs to hear, and we always have the roof off( don't we!) and anyone reading this may be asking the same question.

Tom Tom live IQ is the mutts if you want a separate device, particularly if you travel frequently around major cities or on motorways. The live bit is less essential if you are not going into any major cities or doing longhaul journeys. I have never used the Tom Tom phone app. Used the maps app on my IPhone 4 this afternoon to find Companies House in London on foot.
