Things to do if you have 45 mins spare - wheel colour change

I bought some cans of "Plastidip" for XMas and as today was a "nice" day I thought I'd give them a go.

Watching some instructional videos on Youtube showed that I didn't need to remove the wheels to coat them, just cover the disc/caliper with a bin bag.

So this morning I decided I'd attempt one wheel to see how it looked. The great thing about Plastidip is is you mess up you just peel it off (it's a spray on Latex rather than traditional paint).

So this is before:




10 minutes later this is "during":




After a total elapsed time of 45 mins this is the end result:



So that's a total of 45 mins to change the colour of all 4 wheels and TBH they look great.

I'll leave them to cure today but by tomorrow they should be fine to drive on. TBH if they last until Aril that's all I need as I can peel it off and do it again in the better weather.

There is no need to mask anything (not even the tyre) as you just peel off the excess from around the tyre and it comes off in one piece!

How long do you expect it to last? Will it not just wash off next time you clean the car? How much does it cost? I like the colour of the new wheels though!

If you look on YouTube you will see lots of videos of people jet washing them. Its pretty durable stuff.

It cost me £10 to do all 4 wheels.

I expect I will have to redo it at every tyre change but as it is really cheap and really quick I don't mind :-)

Oddly enough that is the next thing I need to uncover... What color it is as I have a couple of stone chips to touch in...

Cheers, how many cans did it take to do the wheels?

I have been thinking about this for a while myself. the videos are amazing where they do the entire car.

I bought 5 cans and used 1 and a bit LOL

So today I also did the grill on my wife's TT and will do her wheels sometime soon too..

I am also considering a couple of stripes on the bonnet and boot... After all if I don't like them I can just peal them off..

2 cans should do but bear in mind I only did the bits you can see when on the car (I.e. not the back of the wheel) so if you want full coverage you will need more..

The 400ml aerosol spray in black (it is matt black)

You don't mention using a primer, any particular reason for not doing that step?

Only that having seen all the YouTube videos it didn't seem necessary so I thought I would try without and it seems to have worked fine.

If it doesn't stay "stuck" on then I can redo it but TBH I don't think the primer is necessary.
