For those of you that have had the motor in and out of a chimaera, how much of it is it best to have on / leave off the engine to get it in.

Im hoping its possible to put the headers on first as they are a pita to work on with the engine inthe car.

happy to leave inlet off if that makes things simpler as that should be too much hastle to drop back on.

Im going to run the JE alternator bracket, so that can stay off and I the pas pump and bracket should go on ok once the engine its in or do the headers get in the way?

any advice gratefully received. I must have had the v8 out of the tuscan a 100 times but never done the chim. I didnt even take the old engine out !!

cheers

You can leave a lot on, plenum, manifolds, belt etc

Have fun

You can fully dress the engine and drop in although it is easier to leave the plenum and trumpet base off to access those top bellhousing bolts, (use a swivel ratchet spanner for realative ease)!

Make sure you have plenty of 1/2" extensions to access the middle bell housing bolts.

The secret is to put about 3 of them end to end so your ratchet handle is at the tail end of the gearbox where you can swing it, you'll see what I mean.

Also, fit the engine mount plates on to the engine and leave the mounts loose. These can be a bit of a pita to line up so loose is better!

Im not going to tell you how long its been since I drove it its embarrassing... It started by pinching bits off it for the racer....

doh still at least its ended up with a fully refurbed chassis, new wish bones, all new bushes, an will have a t some point a monster 4.6. the 3.9 is just going in to get it up and running

I'd also leave the crank pulley and oil filter off to give you a bit more room.

Have to disagree about the crank pully.

The chassis cross member will be off so loads of room and it will be easier to torque up out of the car.

For clarity, I am talking about the front of the pulley (the part the belt runs around) that is held on by 6 bolts NOT the the main pulley bolt.

Removing the part the belt goes around allows you a little more room to manouver the engine back in place.

Im struggling to get that apart at the mo, my sockets are all to thick walled !!! I've got the crank bolt undone at the moment as the whole thing needs to come off to fit a trigger wheel. Interesting thought about leaving belt pully off the damper though, that would certainly make getting the v8 back in the tuscan as that is a b**stard to get in with it on..

I'm always up for learning so not to detract from the subject, is that a preserp pulley?

I always removed mine as a whole as it's a balanced item.

Its a serpentine engine ( intermediate )

my 1/2 sockets dont fit the bolts the foul on the centre of the damper...

The pully will only go back on one way wont it, as there is a locating pin, so it should retain balance, any way the damper contains most of the weight

Correct, one way only.

I mentioned balance as I had my crank, fly and pully internally balanced, makes a big difference!

iirc, TVR had their engines externally balanced which isn't as accurate.

Yeah external balancing was stock Land Rover.

this 3.9 isnt coming apart to balance it as the plan is not for it to stay in there too long as I want the 4.6 in there, but once the season starts the road car will probably go on the back burner, so 3.9 going in with minimal mods..
