I have slight play in my steering wheel, say 10mm either side of centre, is it likely to be steering UJ's etc, or the rack itself. New shocks and all joints and bushes are tight! P/S on a 2000 4.5 model. Drives straight and otherwise steering is great! Can u get it down to say 5mm or do they all do that. Oh I'm on 195/55/15 front tyres! I'm grafting so will answer replies ASAP. Kind Tvr regards Al.

Now returned to phazed as I have just solved me missing at 4k, yahoo!

That old steering play thing Alun.

Get someone to wiggle the steering wheel while you look at the input shaft to the rack to make sure the play isn't in the column.

If all ok there, check your track rod ends and the track rods themselves, when they are worn they have play at the rack/track rod balljoint.

If all ok there then you will more then likely have play in the rack bar and the pinion, if so there are no parts available!

I had the same thing recently, luckily the UJ bolts just needed tightening up and it was all sorted

Excellent answers as usual, not sure where problem is yet, if rack and there's no spare parts what the eck do one do? Any other racks been fitted yet! So I suppose you can't get an exchange rack then! What's the answer if not cos surely there'll be hundreds of chim owners rudderless before to long! Do we all just search for a decent second hand one?

Racing Green have exchange racks in stock (at a price!). I had mine rebuilt at Kiley Clinton for about £200.00. They are extremely helpful, speak with Roger Clinton on 0121 772 8000.

SSPPGG has fitted a Subari Imprezza rack on his car, details below.

ive just taken my column apart to find some slack ive always had.

ive a new rack, new UJ, all torqued, so no play anywhere else.

turned out the sliding parts of the column (where there is a plastic sleeve, not the swivel ball affair), had some play on it.

not much, but definately could feel it.

I've packed that part of the column shaft with some araldite, so hopefully that will stop the sloppiness.....

if that doesnt work, its coming out again and i will weld the bugger
