Just about to drop the sump off my temp engine to clean it out and have a quick looky inside. is it recommended to use a gasket or just stick to rtv sealant like we do on the dry sumped engine ?

I use a cork gasket with a smear of Hylomar on both sides.

For the first time in 5-6 years there isn't a drop of oil on the garage floor.

I used RTV. When re-fitting the sump I threaded two studs into the bottom of the block which allowed the sump to be lined up and not smear the silicone bead. No leaks so far!

If you can get the Landrover workshop book it shows the position and widths of silicone to apply.

An excellent addition to ensure no leaks is the SD1 spreader plate fitted to the two back bolts.

This helps spread load across the longest run of gasket face at the back of the engine, this is an area that's a common source of leaks if just bolts & no spreader plate is used.

I got one from a Rover SD1 breaker, fitted it, and immediately eliminated my long standing persistent drip from that area.
