hi guys

received one of Clive's lovely decat y pieces this week with fitting instructions so set about spending this morning swapping them over. All going ok up until i had to get the original out - no matter how i jiggled in about with side to side / up down movements the thing wouldn't come out. Few knocks with a rubber mallet to loosen things up but no success. The problem as i see it are there is not enough room between the chassis frame to pull the piece from the exhaust join where the clamp is. Im beginning to think this is not a one man job and possibly needs the main exhuast section to be pulled back to all this swap.

Am i along the right lines or have i made a simple oversight?

thanks in advance

Bit of penetrating oil or WD-40 sprayed on the joint and it'll suddenly fly out biggrin

Top tip, use ratchet luggage straps to pull the manifolds towards the Y if necessary when you refit it.

Have you undone the bolt that secures the exhaust to the engine this will give more play in the exhaust movement just giving you a couple of extra mm to get the old y piece out

right, i'll try both. thanks chaps

the engine bolt was the next stop on the instructions but did think that would help at this stage as it would make it more difficult to jiggle the y piece as the exhaust would be likely to be lower to the ground

no the exhaust wont drop that much as its still held in the middle
when I did mine "undone that bolt in the end it came out" I did have my son at hand one under the car and one above made things a lot easier to push and pull , it was also easier having two of us to put the new y piece in to guide it in to position

worth all the hard work the sound is amazing when you get the revs up ! Tunnels are great fun !
made my tvr driving much more enjoyable

let us know how you get on

I noticed yesterday that my Y-piece has a bracket on it that looks like it should be bolted to the engine block but it isn't ... It actually looks like it's bent out of the way.

Nothing to do with me.....in fact Phil,i remember bolting that up?

Remember we swopped the knackered connector bracket, then i secured the exhaust to the block?

LOL - hadn't even thought of when the exhaust swap was done ... It's been off again since then. biggrin

I dropped the key from the battery isolation switch down into the engine bay and had to retrieve it as it lodged between the lock and the exhaust - that's where I saw the bracket not attached.

I changed my Y piece this week, as has been mentioned before, remove the engine bolt and you get enough side to side movement to get the old one out, twist it sideways towards the drivers side and it will come out.
The Clive's Y piece fits in very easy as without the cat there is plenty of room.

Be careful when fitting the clamps, I tapped the edges with a mallet as I tightened it up but I gave one of them a last tighten and promptly snapped the stud!
