Hi all
Im sure this has been discussed a fair fews times before but... whats the best option for exhaust mods. Where to buy
What to buy
Ect.
I have heard stuff regarding cats, and pre cats. What are pre cats. I wouldnt want to leave it unable to pass the mot but id like more v8 growl for sure.
Also has anybody replaced the manifold, id like to eventually replace the whole system with a nice sounding stainless one.
so really im just asking for a few options, can never have to many options!
Thanks
Rich

This was off a thread i started last year if it helps

[report] [news] Wednesday 26th December 2012
This was after i sleeved the standard system and left main and precats in..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01x4Cs_PHlY&fea...

This is Phil leaving with my sleeved exhaust fitted to his Chim (main and precats still in)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SthbMswkef4

This was after i removed the main and precats and fitted Clives beautiful Y piece

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hM36fIddQg&lis...

Well, pre cats out, original Y piece decatted, and rear silencer still in tact.

I've reverted back, after hearing a few over the last few months, and decided it was a mistake to put cat back in.

The sound is amazing, especially under acceleration

You'll get a plethora of responses about this and a lot seems to be down to individual preference.

If you want more of a growl per buck, then the cheapest route is to have the exhaust sleeved, which will be around £200. See video below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcsE74VZcto

The next cheapest method would be to remove the pre-cats (one of the many jobs I intend to do myself). These reside in the manifolds before the Lambda Sensors. They are not necessary for an MOT, since the pre-cats are there to reduce emissions when the engine is cold and before the engine has got to working temp. The car has to be at normal running temp for the MOT and this is the job of the main cat. See below thread about 1/2 way down for pre-cat removal on Griffith.
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=9&a...

The main cat is found within the lower part of the Y-piece at the front of the engine bay in the exhaust. This will be needed for an MOT. Many use one of Clive's stainless decatted Y-Pieces or an ACT decatted Y-Piece. This can be removed and swapped back with the standard catted Y-piece for MOT time.

Clive's PH profile (very helpful chap): http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?mem...
This may be of help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec90BudXEv8
Here's the decatted ACT Y-piece: http://www.actproducts.co.uk/shop/ms04-griffith-50...

I cannot speak personally for either of Clive's or the ACT Y-pieces as I don't have one, however, many on here swear by them. I may get the dosh to try one myself one day! You can always get a standard Y-piece and decat it yourself.

Some people prefer to go for a new system, such as the Cherrybomb: http://www.cherrybomb.com or a cheaper part system by Offord.

The are of course some caveats as you would expect and one of them is noise. Everybody prefers their own sound, but the volume is something you have to bear in mind. Sleeving the exhaust makes it loud. Some say that this sounds too agricultural, but it is a personal choice. Pre-cat removal and sleeving together sounds louder again. A complete decat (pre and main) plus sleeving is likely to get you some unwanted attention. It seems (and I could be wrong) that quite a few seem either sleever and remove pre-cats, or completely decat but not sleeve. There are some that have done the whole lot!!!

The choices are pretty endless, but head over to Youtube and listen to a few. It should give you a good idea!

Here's a quickie of mine... sleeved exhaust by Austec Racing only and all cats still in.

I have to say I'm sooooo glad I blagged ChimV8's sleeved exhaust ... If anything, it could do to be louder...

...then again, I managed to empty Halfords last night of its sales staff as I started her up in their car park and my mate was able to hear me all the way home (about a mile) from work while he was stood outside my flat door the other night. (He quite confidently told me that I didn't get any higher than third gear on my entire run home and he was right - I don't.)

I'm a big kid and If anyone thinks I shouldn't be then I really couldn't give a crap! biggrin

I had this mod ,sounded very raspy removed silencer box ,the guy fabricated two silencers ,perforated pipe ,thin layer of wadding and rolled welded the outer casing ..It`s an ACT sports exhaust copy.

cost me £150

My exhaust

ACT exhaust

Mine sounded like this but less harsh because had the standard Y piece ,this one has full ACT decat and ACT sports exhaust.

I've had mine sleeved and for the money it is awesome value. My car is a toy so I don't drive it as much as I like. As a result it never fails to impress. I think if I drove it more I would possibly want to do something more because I would get used to/bored of the sound. I've heard cars with the precats out and sleeve done and they do sound more pure. Might be worth starting with a sleeve.

Thanks for all the replies. Wasnt expecting as many useful replies with links and everything, spoiling me!
On the third video down is that with a sleeved exhaust and clives y piece and main cat in and pre cats out?
Has nobody splashed out on a whole new shiney manifold then? If so id love a video of that running.
Has anybody had a custom exhaust made? I had exhausts built for both my old imprezas and my turbo prelude and was pretty pleased with them.
I reckon there should be a voting page made, chimaera/griffith;-
Sleeved only
Sleeved pre cats out
Sleeved pre cats and main cat out
Sleeved y piece
Cherrybomb only
Cherrybomb pre cats out
Cherrybomb pre cats and main cat out
Cherrybomb y piece
Just pre cat
Just pre cats and main cat out

You get the idea, im sure somebody can set something like this up.
