road speed sensor

hi all, ive got a new question for you
what exactly is the road speed sensor and what does it do? does it affect tickover? can it be disconected, will this mean the tickover can be controlled purely by the idle srew?

thanks in advance folks, im having trouble with lumpy tickover again and i am trying to find out if i can ditch the electronics and control it by the idle screw
