Does anyone on here know where I can get a seven groove alternator pulley for a serp chim?

I've been trying to change my alternator this morning and the new one comes with a six groove (which came off beautifully easily of course) so I thought I'd just change over the pulleys ... nah!

So far this morning I've snapped an 8mm Halfords "Professional" hex bit (which I bet they won't exchange it under the lifetime warranty as I don't have the receipt), an 8mm long arm hex wrench and bent an 8mm short arm wrench trying to hold teh alternator shaft still while I undo the pulley bolt on the "old" alternator. Unfortunately I don't have access to an impact wrench or a vice at this time. frown

So, if anyone knows where I can get a new pulley then it'd be most appreciated... biggrin

Cheers

Phil

Take it to your nearest car workshop Phil and that nut will come off with the air rattle/impact gun no problem biggrin I wouldn't even have the cheek to charge someone to do this if it came in to me whistle

If you want to pop over to Gloucester you can borrow my impact wrench and air gun if you like?
I'd offer to bring it to you but the compressor is too big for the boot!

If I had someone local that I use then I'd not have thought twice about doing so but my usual garage is about an hours drive away and don't normally work Saturdays.

There are only two places that I know in Salisbury itself (again, neither normally work Saturdays) ... both of which I called when I needed the plugs changed after I'd flooded it about four days before Xmas not long after I got her and both of them I vowed never to set foot in again.

The AA came out but couldn't get to the back plugs and so were going to take me to a local garage. I called the first one and they just went "Nah - don't want to touch that" - the other was happy enough to take me and said they could get the plugs in and changed for me for the next day - then told me that I needed a new engine as the plugs were supposedly covered in oil so the rings must be shot so the bores must be knackered (great diagnosis there!) and, when I went back to pick up my car, had closed early for Christmas! biggrin

Thanks for the offer - I do have a compressor and air impact wrench in my storage container but no electricity to run it there and no way to get it back here to use it here at the house (I am so looking forward to getting somewhere with a garage again).

I would take you up on it but time's a bit tight at the moment - I'm sorting out my place for my GF moving in here this weekend and at work we've just been doing the ISE show in Amsterdam, I've away next week for a dealer event and then have another one the week after, we've got a product to launch by the end of Feb and there's the Bristol HiFi show to prep for so I was just thinking that if I could find a new pulley I could just order one and when it turns up and I have a spare fifteen minutes just swap it over. biggrin

Anyone used the battery powered impact wrenches?

I could grab one from Screwfix very easily in the morning or MachineMart which looks like it could be a better unit but is a bit more of a run to get hold of - both of those are NiCad battery units though ... I could be tempted to go for an 18v Hitachi unit as that would match my other cordless kit and share the same Li-ion batteries ... hmmm.

Do people still know who their neighbours are round you? Wow! How quaint. biggrin

I think it's time to invest in a cordless impact wrench to sort it - I think I fancy an Hitachi WR18DL as then I can use teh same batteries as the rest of my cordless drills... wink

Ahhh awesome - ok - message popped over to Matt ... Salisbury is a bloody awful place to be really - it's miles from anywhere useful (like a main road). I do miss not having a garage even though my compressor was a bit undersized to drive power tools!

Peter - I think I'm convinced to order the Hitachi impact wrench as it uses the same batteries I use for my cordless drills... biggrin

Morning Phil, Just looked at the Hitachi one on your link and have found a slightly more powerful one brand new for less. Also found a 24v very powerful one with 440 nm of torque for £130 http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=hitachi...

and the hitachi one.

LOL - Matt.phoned me back to tell me that he'd just tried getting his nut off using his rattle gun and it didn't shift ... I feel a little better now. :-)

Found what seems to be a much heftier cordless one at machine mart for £144 so I think that one's on the cards for this afternoon. biggrin

I think it's the same one that machine mart do for £144 but just a different colour housing and we 'need' to go to Southampton today for an Ikea stool apparently so I may as well take advantage of the misery... frown

Good luck with it and remember to run the battery down between charges as the "li ion" have a limited number of charges ( I found out to my expense at £95 a battery).
let us all know if you shift the pulley

Its NiCad so a pain in the arse in that respect - just seen they do a mains powered one with the same torque for £65 which i might get instead - then no problem with batteries dying. smile

It depends if you want a portable one or not? If just for home then save the £80.
If there is a tool hire place they may have one for hire.
