I know the answers is on previous posts but anyone know off the top of their head what the crack is with fitting a pair the 16" Estorils on the front? problems with offset? hitting the inner arch?

Thanks chaps,

Chilli smile

You can run rack stops or have tubular bottom wish bones I use 4mm spacers but they still catch on one side.
6mm would solve it but I believe that changes the offset.
I find the car rides better with them on so the extra effort is worth it !

Hey Chilli, this not a bad thread.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I would personally stick with 15 unless you are having difficulty finding tyres or of course fancy a big brake kit.

It is worth noting that the SE Griffs came with 16" front Estorils so it is not a non-standard configuration.

You need to change the offset if you want to match the 15" wheels .. 10mm spacer will return it back to the correct setup.

obviously the tyres will need changing ..

Oh No! Bugger. I was hoping to use the ones I already have.

Daz, I've just read the thread Matthew liked to and I'm sure it was saying you don't need spacers because the offset is compensated for by the 7.5 inch rim (as opposed to the 15" 7" rim)

Straight fit no spacers needed as per the last run of Griffs, depending on how the body sits square on the chassis rack stops may be needed .

But the idea is to have a 1" difference between front and rear "why did TVR have this approach with different size wheels" surely the only way to do it is to fit eaather 215/45/16 or 225/45/16 on the front .

With a 16" front and rear setup you need to loose 1" from the wall height to compensate for the smaller front wheels .

Why did TVR fit odd size wheels ?

Not uncommon Daz. Most Lotus's have smaller fronts too.

Daz im sure the spacers required is not 10mm there was a lot of chat on this and incorrect measurements and the outcome was about 5-6mm Loud430 runs rack stops only had his handles really well.
On the last griffs they only used rack stops no spacers at all !
I cant remember what size disc I use i can find out chill if required ?

Hi Mark,

I think I may have settled on disc size and calipers now, just a few phone calls to make and the 16" Estorils to source and should be on the way smile Would I be right thinking that you don't use longer wheel studs as your spacers are only 4mm?

If your going for the same wheels and tyres all round do you think its worth adjusting the ride heights !The car may look a little flat.

I was thinking of 10mm spacers with a 7j 16" with an ET of 35 after market wheel like mine .

Right, the rear 16" Estorils are 7.5" with an ET of 33 (or is this 32?) Anway, at 33, if you put them on the front, the outer rim is 2mm further into the arch (towards the centre line of the car) and the inner rim edge is 14mm further in than the 15" rims were... As Matthew says, the last Griffs with the 16" fronts were as above, and TVR did not fit spacers to these. So, 2mm spacers would have the 16" wheels filling the arches to the same degree as the 15's (in terms of sticky-out ness). If there's no rubbing I'm inclined to run without the spacers (initially) and see how she behaves in the twisties/on rutty roads (possible tramlining)... although I've been advised (and also tending towards) fitting spacers when I fit the wheels..... but this seems to be the 'no right answer' bit.. and, apart from the visual 2mm lost in 'track' what exactly will you lose/gain that you don't want that spacers will rectify? tramlining? excessive oversteer? earlier threads suggest the adverse effects (in handling terms) of the 16" ET33's are minimal and probably unnoticeably by most drivers and in normal road use.... And others say offsets notwithsatanding the 16" ET33's are an improvement in handling terms over the 15" 25ET's.

All this just to fit proper brakes on the front smile

Still, this weeks great news is the new shiny 'Y' piece has arrived at my folks gaff (thanks Clive)
