Morning all, just got my "Word of the day" from Dictionary.com and it was Chimera/Chimaera... So I thought I'd share

Word of the Day for Thursday September 16, 2004

chimera ky-MIR-uh, noun:
1. (Capitalized) A fire-breathing she-monster represented as
having a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.
2. Any imaginary monster made up of grotesquely incongruous
parts.
3. An illusion or mental fabrication; a grotesque product of
the imagination.
4. An individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of
diverse genetic constitution, produced as a result of organ
transplant, grafting, or genetic engineering.

These "chimeras" can be created because of our
power--derived from the recombinant DNA technology
developed in the early 1970s--to move DNA from one species
to another.
--Bryan Appleyard, [3]Brave New Worlds

Chimera comes from Latin chimaera, from Greek chimaira
"she-goat, chimera."

So there you go! Remember to Capitalise you spelling of Chimaera! Id rather be a "A fire-breathing she-monster" than "made up of grotesquely incongruous parts"...

We all feel better for the knowledge dont we?!

It's also a place in Turkey that I visited a few weeks ago - although spelt Chimiera. The place where the legend is supposed to have taken place.
It's 1km up a mountain and the rocks literally breath fire an amazing sight!

So that dream I have involving a Czech porn star, a length of washing machine waste-pipe, an empty "Paul Masson" bottle and a paddling pool full of butterscotch angel delight is a Chimaera?

I'm so glad it has a name...

Yes, unless it ever actually happens. It is then correctly termed "medical emergency", I believe.
