Discussion
I know this has been discussed before, but the search facility is still down.
My engine gets hot, the fans cut in, but the dial is showing me 70 degrees. The fans cut out when it cools and then cut in again when it is warm. They should cut in at around 80 degrees. My suspicion is that the sensor isn't accurate.
I want to replace the temp sensor. I appreciate that the TVR one isn't very accurate and have seen posts about the original Landrover sensor still in the block proving more accurate. I'd like to use the alternative Landrover sensor, but don't have the software (or a PC/ Windows based computer) to connect up to the car so I can get an accurate setting with the variable resistor attached to it.
Bearing this in mind, is there any sensor you would recommend as a direct replacement to the original TVR sensor; OR; is their another way of setting the variable resistor without needing a PC and the leads, perhaps based on when the fans cut-in?
Cheers again... trying to 'de-niggle' before spring!

It's precisely what you are thinking. Connected the variable resistor to the L/R temp sender and through that to the gauge. Run the car up to temperature and when the fans cut in adjust it so the gauge reads ~95 degrees, then when they turn off the gauge should be showing ~90.
TBH Audi set their guages in the same way from new, anything between 80 and 100 will show as "90" on most Audis as "90" just means "within normal operating parameters"..
it's more important that the gauge is consistent than accurate, you'll get used to seeing a pattern and any deviation will ring alarm bells so just set it to the fan coming on at ~95 on the gauge and you'll be fine.

Thanks for that. Is that the temp the fans should cut in or is it matched to the thermostat?

Go to the 'oil pressure question' thread, it's back about 3 pages and is dated Monday 11th Feb. Scroll to page 2 and halfway down you'll find a very comprehensive description, including resistance values, from our learned friend Chimpofdarkness. Be easier to do a linky but no good at those!
