Hi chaps,

Since the weather has got really cold I've been having a few issues when starting the car.

It starts fine but sounds like it might not be running on all 8 and whenever I touch the throttle the revs drop before rising confused

Once she's warmed up everything is fine..... bar the tapping cam/followers. Is it my imagination about the cold or does the temperature really effect starting. I drive her at least once a week.

Nick

Cold weather. Slower to warm up to normal. ECU is also feeling the cold!

Cold makes everything work less well. My diesel Audi takes longer to start, the Mrs is slower out of bed in the mornings, etc.

To the point, check your plugs (just two will do to start with), make sure the leads aren't shorting, and make sure all 8 leads are actually attached to their plugs (do that first - hot exhaust is a bit of a turn off for doing it properly). When I first had my Chim it ran ok, but a friend found me an extra 30bhp by pushing the number 8 extender back onto the plug. One nearest the driver, a well known culprit.
After that it's coil, distributor cap, air filter and so on and so on

If you start to notice other electrical wierdies (alarm playing up, speedo reading wrong), then start to suspect you are running on battery alone and check the 100 amp fuse. There is an easy way to do this so long as you have spent £8 at Maplins on a multimeter - just ask again and i will tell you how.

Stepper motor was recently taken out and given a good going over. I'll check the plugs and such when she's cooled down smile

Funny mine did this last week. Fired up fine, left running 2 minutes, put it in reverse and the slightest pressure on the throttle and the car began to stall and the revs dive. Did this a few times, gave it a boot full and it eventually settled down. Drove perfect afterwards. Only serviced week before and they should have cleaned the stepper!

This isnt going to be a stepper motor fault. Its just the good old 14cux overfueling.

My griff was doing this the other week when it was -10 or so here, once it's been idling for 15 secs or so it seems much better, it think it's just cold engine and fuel that does it.

Ahh, that would explain it. Is it caused by the cold weather though, or is it something more sinister?

The classic over fueling fault is due to the cold start part of the fuel map that is still Range Rover, that is known to put about 25% more fuel in than is needed. The Tornado chips greatly reduce this.

That would probably explain the 2 big black circles on my garage wall and the 'spit' effect on the floor behind the car. Oh well, at least she aint running lean biggrin
