Hi all.
First off let me just say I am fully aware a 4L Hc TVR is not going to return good mpg (unless your doing a intriguing lpg conversion chimp) however id like to know what sort of mpg you guys get roughtly. I mean how many miles do you think you would do from say £50 avoiding motorways. Reason I ask is im not sure what I should get and it does smell incredibly rich when running, if thats just the nature of the beast then fine but if its a indication something isn't quite right then I want to look in to it. Also when doing ecu upgrades and tuning do you notice better economy. Im not after fiesta like fuel return however if it is running way to rich and ecu upgrades will net more power and allow the engine to burn all the fuel it uses rather than waste some then I will have to look in to that

Very approx but my 4.0 did around 200 mile on a tank full, 20 mpg.
Had a Mark Adams "chip" tuned for a previous owner to give economy rather than max performance I was told. It did do lots of "bangs 'n pops" on over run, sounded great but isn't that un-burnt fuel going into the exhaust ?
I only run mine in the summer months (God I miss it) which surely helps with mpg figures, but last season was getting a consistent 21-23 mpg from my 500 in fully standard trim, mostly on country B roads, not too much town work.
In todays fuel prices it works out approx 180 miles for £50.
It's normal for it to smell rich while it's warming up from cold of course, and the rv8 likes it rich anyway, but if it's excessive, have you cleaned/replaced the air filter for a start off?

Very much depends on condition. When I used to use mine as a daily commuting through town I would get about 11-12 mpg. That was slow moving (but not usually stationary) traffic. Otherwise, 150 miles is usual between a full tank and quarter full (this is when I usually bottle it and fill up - just in case!) so I suppose (likePhillpot) 200 miles on a tank might be possible.
Edited for factual accuracy, or something....

Hmmm ... If I used the car just to do to-and-from-work runs then I would cane a tank of fuel in two weeks (it's a two-and-a-half mile round trip to work and back) which works out to about 3 mpg.
If I took it on a good long motorway run then I *MIGHT* be able to break 20 mpg.
Had an ECU swap done since then (due to a fault in the existing engine harness that caused the old bugger to cut out completely at random) and I've now lost my pops and bangs on the overrun (ECU no longer fuels on the overrun so that's one fuel saving) but I can pretty easily and repeatedly now achieve (or even better) 30mpg on a good long motorway run...

I did a run to Stoneleigh from Reading last weekend, via Shiplake - which I reckon must have been a 200 mile round trip.
Started on full, now on 1/4 tank.
And I wasn't pootling along, but giving it some reasonable beans on the motorway.
I don't think my car has a cat (it's a Jersey import with docs to say it doesn't) which may increase the fuel economy a bit.

a mixture of motorway driving , shuffling traffic and giving it the full moo! I get around 150 miles before chickening out and filling up at around 1/4 left so theoretically 200 miles.
mine is a 450 with Mark Adams, and it pops and bangs!
i reckoned on around 18 mpg average and around 24 if i kept it under 80 on M1 to work and back.

...but that was before getting the ECU done. For more "normal" driving I'm about 26-28 mpg.

I managed 22 mpg last weekend Eastbourne to Beaulieu round trip, M27 and A27 at "healthy" speeds.
I think I have a lot to do match your economy Phil. An eco freindly chim! sell it and buy a 500. lol
If Dave get's his "gasbag" Chim working right then he should easily trounce that (or at least working out £ for £)...I think I have a lot to do match your economy Phil. An eco freindly chim! sell it and buy a 500. lol
