Sump how do you seal yours ?.

Ok got a gasket one of those new one at 20 quid, any tips on sealing the sump ?, loctite on bolt threads ?, hylomar ( a smear ) on the gasket ?, torques ?. Cheers

Hylomar is good, how confident are you with a file? The sump pan is like the Himalayas, it'll seal better if you dress it before you fit it!

Biggest prob is loosening, not the torque.

I think a lot of that deformation is due to overtightening of the bolts. Maybe as someone has thought it may stop a leak when it just makes it worse.

I would not file it flat as you are just making the situation worst by making the metal thinner... try localy hammer the face flat if it is pushed up around the holes...

Is that one of those stouter looking gaskets from eBay?

I fit a stud on each side for easy alignment and a very thin smear of Hylomar, both sides.

Don't over tighten as said.

I recommend fitting the Rover SD1 type spreader plate on the widely spaced rear bolts.

For some reason this little plate got deleted on later Rover V8 engines, but it does do a great job of eliminating leaks from the rear of the sump gasket.

I had to get the sump off a year(ish) ago and didn't have a gasket at hand when it came to re-fitting so I just gave everything a good clean and used that strange black silicon seal stuff. Its hasn't leaked since!

The problem (with mine) is the way they're pressed. Filing increases the mating area. Nige knows I can file with the best of them

It's a bit of tin .. get in there with the big hammer and MAKE it flat

Or use Loctite 5900.. it will never leak again... but you will have problems getting it off...

I do know of people using self adhesive closed cell foam... and nothing more

I was reading the Steve Heath Bible last night to find out about sump baffles, and noticed that he said to do this - seal with Silicone sealant

You need to put an even bead along the lip, gently bolt up the sump, leave overnight for the silicon to set then nip up.

Hmm good call, just ordered one, every little helps, also got loctite 542 for the bolt threads

You can get the spreader plate from Rimmer Bros. I've got one of those Ebay gaskets, Hylomar stuff, spreader plate and a set of fresh bolts and washers ready to do the sump. Unfortunately, the weather has been pants, so I haven't had chance.
