Anyone want to fill a sump with water for me?
Discussion
Wondering if some kind soul with a tin sump off a serp handy (ideally with the hammered front end) would mind filling it with 6.5 litres of water and posting up the distance between the gasket face and the fluid level please? A pic would be handy too.
Serious request - trying to ascertain where the resting oil level sits so as to accommodate an oil return port that's not supposed to be submerged.
Maybe this info is already out there....

I suppose I could do this... My sump is off.. has a hammered front etc.... But how much will stay in the filter etc??
Thanks; appreciated. I'm not concerned with the filter as my fill on change routine involves 6.5 plus filter 2/3 full... Also aware the level will reduce due to what gets pumped around etc; just looking for a working level as a benchmark that is unlikely to be exceeded. Pupp said:
It was my original intention to return via the front cover Dave but, without using a scavenge pump, it's just going to be too high unfortunately
Too high? If its pressure fed what the heck does the height matter? In some ways a high return can be an advantage ~ oil won't drain away whilst stood & less air likely to get into the lines....Unless you are pouring oil & depending on gravity I can't see why people fuss, although I agree returning into air and allowing oil to drop out is better than pumping airy oil into the sump.
