Hi Folks,

My 97 400 seems to have developed a bit of an gearbox issue. When getting on and off the power in 5th there is a loud clunk/bang that seems to be from the gearbox.

It only seems to happen in 5 th and there seems to be a lot more slack in the drivetrain when rocking back in forth in 5th than in the other gears.

I did a bit of searching and it seems the T5 box can have issues with 5th. I presume it's gearbox out time but just wondered if anyone has any pointers as th the way to go?

Also worth checking the Diff bushes and UJ's as well before taking the gearbox out.

I think the T5 box in a Chim 400 is quite reliable, the Cerbera's on the other hand do have a reputation for eating 5th but normally it breaks up completely.

I'd ask a Tvr expert to drive/ witness said clunk! I replaced all drive shaft UJ's and diff mounts, all clunking stopped, an expert will confirm what your issue is. Hope that helps.

I have checked them from under the car in a pit and there dosent appear to be much play in either diff or driveshafts.

The play seems to be in the gearbox when in 5 th gear only as I can rock it back and forth from the pit.

It is more like a sharp bang when the drive is taken up in 5th.
