what size drill bit did you use to pilot?
I'm not with my car till Tuesday
But I wouldn't rely on my measurement as you know these cars are all slightly different,
I used about a 2 mm pilot bit which allowed a bit of leeway then once I was happy I used the correct size wood cutting bit
One with teeth on the outside to get a clean hole
Like this

Ignore the size on the bit as its for illustration only

I fitted mine last weekend.
Drilled a pilot hole first then fitted the pin. I found the pin didn't line up with the hole in the bonnet once it was tightened up so I used a dremel to gradually open up the hole in the bonnet around the centre line of the pin until the catch dropped into place.
The pin is only just long enough especially on the drivers side.

I think I found the same issue on the driver side now you mention it, I levelled the pin with a die grinder on the hole in the inner wing same size as the washer so its invisible,Drilled a pilot hole first then fitted the pin. Daz I used that cutter so I could see it going in square and when it started to break through
