Finally got the coilpacks and VR sensor wiring complete this week and tried to start the car for the first time.
On the second attempt there was a loud noise. I disconnected the fuel pump relay and tried to turn over the engine again but the starter wasn't engaging the flywheel. Removed the starter motor to find this.

Not sure what could have caused this exactly but seems too much of a coincidence that it would happen on the first start on the coipacks. Also worried there may be other damage.

Couple of theories are:

1) Something jammed between the flywheel and starter (loose nut, washer or Bolt etc.)
2) Incorrect timing or Cranking advance settings causing early firing?
3) Incorrect coil pack wiring or HT Leads wrongly connected causing wrong cylinder to fire?
4) VR sensor revs spike adding too much advance.

Could either 2,3,or 4 cause the engine to lock during cranking and wreck the starter.

I did double check all the wiring, HT leads etc. before starting and also checked the VR sensor output in tuner studio with the fuel relay removed.

Obviously need to replace the starter and recheck everything prior to cranking the engine again including the timing. Just wondered what else I should be checking, and if there is any other likely cause.

No 1 seems the most plausable reason, unless something in the starter itslef like a collapsed bearing.

Probably a combination of a weak casting and over advanced cranking ign timing scratchchin
