Half welded outriggers :( or what ?
Discussion
Are they *really* bad?
When purchasing my car, one of the things I looked for was recent body lift work - new outriggers in Oct12 seemed a good thing.
However having viewed it up on a life they are the half welded (half arsed?) kit jobbies. (from the same garage that quoted 12 hours for an engine out manifold gasket replacement)
Should I be concerned ?
The garage I had do my fluids (diff & gearbox) are a local family indy; I trust them and they weren't unduly concerned. Indeed, they were pleasantly complimentary on the condition of the old girls posterior - and they specialise in older performance vehicles, though more upgrady drifting type of stuff.
I could post some underside piccies but they are quite dull. Suffice to say front brakes are due, but not critical and rear droplink bushes - but again they weren't unduly concerned... the big question is the diff noise.
Cheers
PS - WHAT an enormous amount of tie wraps! can't these be changed for something rubbery ?

It might only be me but,I think you've probably answered your questions yourself . If I were you I would leave the "unduly concerned"garage owner alone, and take your car to someone who knows what their doing, and is concerned. You, your car ,your iffy brakes, your half welded chassis ? Your life !!

Get it welded properly! It can be done albeit difficult, it's an open and probably untainted weld possibly not a vey good weld at that. When purchasing my car, one of the things I looked for was recent body lift work - new outriggers in Oct12 seemed a good thing.

Playing Devils advocate...
If by "half welded" you mean sleeve joined then - TBH - I don't see that there's a problem *UNLESS* you had the work done and agreed one thing and the company doing it did something else. Sleeving and welding can easily be a stronger joint than the original weld to the chassis and doesn't have to be a source of water ingress into the chassis tubes. I was really quite suprised at the job done on mine!
There's a lot more things in the design and manufacture of a Blackpool Bucket that concern me more than that.

I was under the impression the O/P was meaning that the outriggers had only been welded on half the tube from underneath (preventing chassis lift) in which case it will not be as strong as a complete weld and open at the top allowing the ingress of water etc.
I hope this is not the case.

Not having seen other welding work on a TVR before I don't know what the differences are....
Unsure if actually open at the top, or not, I guess I need it up and a bendy mirror.
When I looked at a car at Mole Valley they mentioned that they only do full welds and that some companies only do half-welds; but they didn't say the latter was 'unsafe' just an easier and cheaper - perhaps not as long lasting...

Do you mean its a half "frame" type that has been cut in the middle?. If that is the case, I would think that as long as rest of metal is ok, and as BF said, they have sleeved it then it is probably ok (if the welds are good). Im sure others more qualified in outrigger replacement will be along shortly.
Hi,
I have just uploaded the underside pics I took to here: http://www.wastedspace.co.uk/cms/2013/03/26/pics-o...
Looks sleeved to me..
