Fitted Y piece this morning, and cut box open, welded in new perf pipes and packed box with silencing material stuff smile piccies below with box as found frown

I think Clive's Y has allowed all the earlier induction and top end mods to really work, the difference in response and acceleration is huge, nearly scared myself stupid with it this afternoon biggrin

Is there much difference in sound going back to the perforated pipes?

Yep it sounds very different to what it did, but it would be a combination of the perf pipes and silencing material, and not having the main cat in there, sounded like a (nice) North Atlantic fishing trawler before. If anything it's a tad quieter, but then it was very loud before, it now sounds cloud9

Chilli - did you previously have your system 'sleeved' and have you just un sleeved it? I fitted my ACT decat y last Friday. didnt fit perfectly which is annoying seeing as Clive's seem to fit perfectly. Sound wise I wouldn't say it was any louder but a different tone. I would like it louder so I may sleeve the system also as I cannot justify paying silly money for a custom exhaust or cherry bomb system as mine is a brand new standard system (not my purchase).

Hi Joshua, the Y piece is stainless steel, and you could see your face in it, like a mirror... however, after fitting and a 10 mile drive it had changed colour to what I can best describe as 'bronze'... I'm given to understand that it will continue to get darker, but will still look very good.... Thanks for the positive comment, it does enhance the engine bay immenseley... I would highly recommend Clive's 'Y' as a great mod... it's relatively cheap for a significant power increase, and it sounds bloody marvelous... smile

Hi Richard, I see you're in East anglia... me too smile We cut the box open this afternoon, and you can see what was inside from the piccie above.. I do believe that what was in there is generally known as 'sleeving', the perforated pipes in the box were removed and replaced with 'solid' pipes, effectively making it a 'straight through' box, which was extremely loud... so, we've removed the solid pipes from the box, welded in perforated pipes back in, and packed it with sound proofing 'glass'... which I guess you could call 'de-sleeving' it...

Have you had your pre-cats removed? I have no pre-cats, no main cat, and a silencer box that should now be back to what the standard box should do, and it sounds fantastic... If you have no pre-cats, and a de-catted 'Y' I would suggest that a sleeved box on top of this would be very loud.... OK for short journeys and top down hooning, but could be a real PIA if you're going to do long road trips... The continuous 'drone' (which I had) will make long journeys very uncomfortable and detract from your driving pleasure.... Just my personal opinion of course....

Richard, nice Y!

I can't believe you were still running the cat considering your mods!

Are you coming to Neil Garners this Saturday, if so I'll join you on the rollers smile !

Chilli, did you run yours for anytime with the sleeved pipe in? I sleeved mine last year and have Clives "Y" to fit when I get round to it shortly, plus remove the pre cats, is it really toooooo loud

Looks flipping great Chilli. Some induction system, sounds like you've got the exhaust combo just right. Lovely.

you could always cut out the box and buy a pair of cherry bombs (circa £75) and weld/clamp them in to replace the box, not expensive and prob easier to reverse than sleeving tbh.

Hi Rich, the box was sleeved before I bought the car, and it sounded superb! When the engine was rebuilt we removed the pre-cats, and this made it louder again,! It did sound very meaty, it was more of a growling rumble than a burble. I was tempted to fit the Y with the sleeved box, but a number of people, including CliveF recommended the box be returned to standard, i.e. remove the sleeves, put new perf pipes in, and pack with silencing material... It's almost as loud now on tick over as it was when sleeved, so I suspect that it would be much louder with no cats and a sleeved box... I'm all for loud, but on a long journey with the hood up I think it could become unpleasant if you went the no cats and sleeved route... And it would probably attract too much of the attention that you don't want cop

Having said that, give it a go with the Y... you'll know if it's too loud as soon as you fire her up smile

Hi Peter, I must admit I was stunned at the difference yesterday smile I was expecting a power hike with the main cat absent, but you really can feel the increase... I won't make it to Neil Garners this weekend, as there's a good possibility I'll be travelling North again on Sunday grumpy

I'll try and get a RR before I drop the car up to Sportmotive though smile
