early chim alloy door covers
Discussion
evening all, i have a 93 car with the door locks just behind the doors, some of the early cars have alloy covers over the locks, does anyone know if these just glue over the key type lock i have fitted? the next question is if they do, does anyone know where i can get a couple? cheers. paul.
These are not exactly covers but replacement for the key type used on the very early cars
the key-less type were used from mid 94 to early 96 approx if this helps http://www.thetvrshop.com/TVR/Parts_details/TVR%20...

I don't know what the lock ones look like unfortunately. The button ones are as described below.
The cap definitely doesn't cover the lock style bit.
The cap sits over a large spring located in a holder which in turn is bolted up into the wing from below.
The lock mechanism is hidden behind the carpet on the rear wing.
The push button cap is connected to the lock mechanism by what is basically just a steel rod and plastic clip. Unclip the plastic bit to remove the rod. Then get a socket wrench on the cap holder bolts (3 of them) and pull out the cap complete with holder and spring.
If this is identical to how your lock works then a simple swap should be easy. Depending on whether the lock is also a button and can be depressed, the diameter of the hole etc, it may not be as simple as swapping one for another. You will need more than just the silver alu cap.
Hope that makes sense - sorry, I didn't take any pictures of this when I stripped the car.

thats great stuart, thanks for the write up, sound like i need to have a look & measure the lock diameter, my locks do push down but have a key barrel in the middle of them, you still need to push down on them to open the door. sounds like i may need to track down some complete s/hand ones if the diameter is the same. i hope youve got your chim repaired now? cheers. paul.

Agree with this should be 3 8mm headed bolts and the cap is not a cover but a solid button will the base milled out for the rod as mentioned above, not having to do anything in this area on your key lock model of car before I cant be certain how easy this will be for you to do The cap definitely doesn't cover the lock style bit.

I've been thinking exactly the same Paul - the locks on mine are no longer used so it would be nice to get shot of the lock mech...Phil
