I am wanting to change out the worn carpet set and was wanting to know what materials people are using. I am not keen on the feel of the original carpet so want a more modern one. What is the material people are now using? Are people mixing and matching materials, such as door cards versus rear shelf?

Many thanks

The original carpets were wool (mine are anyway) whereas most automotive carpet is synthetic.

If you want to do a DIY job then you would be better to buy a complete pre made set form the likes of these guys.

It`s killing me to pay those prices for a carpet ..when you can buy a full wool carpet for a MGB for £110.

It`s called TVR tax furious

Why did I know you'd jump in with that ...

Yup - and it's probably also called "economies of scale" as well and I think the MGB carpets are a much simpler set too... biggrin

That sounds a great idea. What did you look for when searching for someone who carpet braids? Do the carpet companies do it.

No - you're telling me how you see it ...

Next you'll be telling me that a Bentley Continental should only be £60k because it only has 4 times the engine capacity of a £15k Fiesta.

If you don't like the price of the carpets that are being sold by a manufacturer of carpet sets then don't buy them!

Why is the price of a TVR roof several times more than that of an MX-5? Is it because it's more complex? No - it's because there isn't really the same demand for TVR roofs and so the costs (materials, storage, design) have to be spread across less units - hence my comment about economies of scale. You seem to think that the only costs involved are straightforward material costs.

By the way - that seat company you love to link to seem to be stuck in a timewarp as they are still quoting 17.5% VAT and - at around £475 a set in leather (depending on model) - plus 20% VAT and carriage you're looking at the best part of £600 which seems incredibly expensive against a set of - say - MX-5 seats that are about half that cost and are finished in leather too...

...oh, hang on, that's the same sort of example that you're making on the carpets ... well bugger me! biggrin

There are companies who specialise in carpet edging .Most carpet shops will know someone who does it,you just have to choose what you want ,binding or whipping (ooh err). Its done the same way they edge rugs. biggrin

When I looked at doing it I went to see gary and hoods and trims Hertfordshire way, and he buys the carpet and makes it up so you can have more or less what you want.. And the the fact that it will be a perfect fit unlike the sets you but. All in all worked out less the 80quid extra from memory, well worth the extra for that perfect custom fit. Oh and my original carpets were synthetic. Wool isn't great for the use in cars.....

They just cut them from a pattern ten at a time then pay someone the minimum wage to fit the edging on .. all the carpets at the above company are made in house ..

The seats are cheap compared to paying someone £600 plus just to have your seats re trimmed in leather .
