Folks, to help keep the engine temp down I'm thinking about having the manifolds and y piece coated in Zircotec which says it reduces temperatures by a third. Anyone had this done and worth the money?

An alternative is wrapping but I've read mixed reviews.

Cheers,
Mark

Yep it does work but it isn't cheap, had mine done three years ago and the colour is fading, I went for black.

I used some por 15 high temp exhaust paint. got the manifolds blasted first to key them up then sprayed them, so far they are keeping their colour 6 months on. I had alittle bit of flaking where the manifold spreads out in 4 pipes I think as dont hav access to car a the mo, so I just rubbed down and reapplied a couple of coats after masking off engine bits as obviously fiited them back, and for £25 a tin with still a third left pretty good value I went for silver as it had the high temp rating , good luck. I would advice to remove them before spraying.

Will be giving this a miss! Just found response to my enquiry in junk mail :

Regarding pricing; for TVR Chimaera V8 manifolds the cost to coat is £310 for Primary Black™ or £510 for any from our Performance Colours™ range. For the Y connector pipe, the cost to coat is £182 for Primary Black™ or £300 for any from our Performance Colours™ range. For 2 rocker covers, the cost to coat is £182 for Primary Black™ or £300 for any from our Performance Colours™ range. For the exhaust and plenum, we require all dimensions to be able to provide you with an accurate quotation. Prices exclude shipping and VAT. Turnaround time is approximately 10 working days with payment accepted via credit card or bank transfer.

Will be heat resistant paint and high under bonnet temperatures!!!

Just don't be tempted by 'cermakrome' as a cheaper alternative. It looks piss-poor after a short time and the service from them is abismal, they wanted FULL PRICE again! Arrogant and dismissive. mad

Thanks Phazed. Didn't bother with the manifolds? I want to reduce the underbonnet heat to suitable for daily use and my heat resistant foil on the inner wings is scorched and peeling in places so going to replace and don't want it happening again. I've heard horror stories about heat wrapping the manifolds as they can rust away and unwrapped areas can crack due to the concentrated heat.
All advice gratefully received.

I have had to replace my headers twice after wrapping them....this current set ain't wrapped! furious
First set it cracked the headers at the 4 into 1 joints after about 6 months, and the second time the headers had cracked and also rusted under the wrap to the point they were unrepairable after twelve months.

Doesn't Tim and ACT have some deal with one of the coaters? Is it this place:

Researched this quite a bit with both my racing V12 Jag and my Chim in mind. Came to the conclusion that Zircotec Abingdon was best choice, but mainly based on their data. Have seen it used on several classic racers but not had chance to speak to said owners. Have not had it done yet due to cost and a recent redundancy, so am also interested if anyone else has experience of this product? Maybe we can get some customer refs from Zircotec... I'll also ask around the racing fraternity too.

What did it cost and have you got pictures? Am I right in saying they do the inside as well? How do they surface prep inside? Acid dip or what? Cheers

I have no pics yet but it's brand new act performance manifolds with cat and decat pipes. Cost £335 inside and out. No idea how they do it but worried by mcdebs post as act describe it as "cermakrome"

A word from the Zircotec Q&A:
Q29. Can you coat the inside of my exhaust? - Here at Zircotec we only apply our ceramic coating to the external surfaces. We are aware of some paint products that are applied internally. The conditions inside an exhaust manifold are quite extreme with gas at temperatures in excess of 1,000oC; pulsing gas flow of more than 20 m/sec; large pressure and temperature variations; significant vibration; and thermal stress. We are concerned that it is impossible to prepare the internal surfaces of a pipe or manifold sufficiently to receive a paint, and with such arduous operating conditions we fear that these products can easily become detached, causing serious damage to downstream components such as turbochargers and catalysts. Furthermore, these products narrow the flow channels and can restrict flow (even a thin paint can reduce the available flow area by up to 2%) giving rise to reduced engine performance. Our recommendation is that you limit any coating to just the external surfaces. You might consider polishing the internals to avoid any rough edges or corners, but our technical experts really do not advise putting any form of coating on the inside of an exhaust manifold or exhaust system.

Sorry guys, thems the one. Shame, as Tim is a top bloke and tried his best to help and I'd do business with him anytime, but the company who does 'em, stinks! Told them I'd 'help' whenever I could.

I think Zirotec coating is well worth it, and I had mine redone (for free) after 12 months because they got their process wrong. Bit it cost me to have the manifolds removed and refitted.

I've not had it done on my Chim yet...But these are the photos of my Tuscan manifolds and cats in Sterling Silver.

smileAlways looking for customers that have had our coatings and then completed a few thousand miles. We are thinking of starting a 'rogues gallery' of under the bonnet pix of cars with Zircotec coatings. If you are happy to send few pics let me know biggrin

Cool idea. Out of interest, would it be much of a job to get my 'cermakrome' [crap, st job and awful customer service] coating replaced with zircotec?
