So next month it’ll be 3 years that I have had my Chimaera 500 which has never let me down once: she has a full service history, only 36k miles and recently had surprised my friend David (ChimpOnGas) and I by producing 252 bph on the rear wheels on the rolling road he had his LPG conversion done… => she is a “keeper”.

I am based in London, so the TVR is only used for day trips at weekend, weekends away, holidays or trips with the boys.

I am lucky enough to have a garage, so she nice and dry when not being used and I get a pretty good rate on a classic insurance…

This moth I am going to be a daddy (first child), so the Chimaera is going to be used even less often, as the weekend days trips, weekends away or holidays will not happen in the Chimera, but in the recently purchased family wagon (at Citroen C4 Picasso..)… so the Chimaera will be used for trips with the boys only Piston Heads Breakfast clubs, trips to Beaulieu, Goodwood and other related motoring related trips)…

The other solution is that the mrs the baby and I can go in the Chimaera at the same time; therefore fit a baby seat on the rear shelf parcel.

My friend David is suggesting having a frame made (by the guy who did the frames supporting is LPG and custom made petrol tanks, the job has been amazingly well done) to fit the child seat. The frame would be on the parcel shelf, fitted to the bolts where the anti-roll bars get fitted…

I do not yet own a child seat (we should get it next weekend), but wonder:
1) If anyone had ever fitted a child seat where I am thinking putting it (is there enough head room to have a child sitting there?)
2) Insurance wise, where would I stand? (the TVR is a 2 seater car...).

PS: I have been looking a Cerberas this weekend…. But I would be losing the convertible fun…. Or have been thinking that a Porsche 968 convertible, with an added turbo or super charger could be the answer, it would provide 4 seats, top on / top off possibility, good looks (I think), reliability, good both space, would handle really well and would probably have some similar performances that the 500…? I am a big Porsche fan, but think that the TVR is a much more fun motor… you see less of them, they look awesome, they are fast, they are different and they a British…

At the moment I am not considering getting read of the Chimaera, it will become my toy (instead of mine and the mrs toy), but I can’t keep of thinking that after a while, not being able to take the mrs and the baby in the fun car might become an issue…

Be interesting to see what comes out of this; I was thinking similar thoughts (mine is 3 now and I reckon she could still fit - though it would be a bit blowy in the back)

bit older, but my Daughter is 5. I put a full child seat in the front and it fits nicely.

Three people in a two seater car. Not sure how you would fall with that legally. Most cars are rated up to a maximum number of persons, which does not differentiate between ages.

The French are particularly hot on this sort of thing and so would the insurance company. I'm interested in the different views though!

Sorry Frenchie, I have grandchildren and am with Chris on this. Not enough room, problems with insurers, dangerous (if the brackets were not good enough in a head on crash, your baby would self-destruct on the windscreen).
If you want to test it, go to Halfrauds, tell them you want to try a car seat to see if it would fit, and try it. I would be amazed if it would fit. They are bigger than you think.
Also, the back of your neck would be a prime target for half digested baby food.........yuk! vomit
A full child seat fits nicely in the front of "Grawad's Fwawwi" as my TVR is known by speed freak Harry (4 and a half)

Hang on Norm - I will find out what model my grandkid's one is as soon as it comes back from taking him to pre-school. It fits beautifully in my Chimaera, though he does struggle to reach the pedals.....

Seems sensible to me that if you could have strong enough mounting points, a child seat would work in the rear area.

However, I think the "2 seater" / Insurance bit is where you are going to come unstuck I am afraid.

I use this seat for my 3 year old and 6 year old. Sits in the seat fine.

I have some child Recaros in my BMW but they are too big and bulky to sit well in the Chim's seats.

Good luck.

I can't even visualise the idea of a "rear" child seat in the Chim, so if anyone does it I'd love to see a picture..

Having said that I KNOW I'd never do it, the prospect of a child sitting "up there" doesn't bear thinking about, too high, too exposed and I'm sure the insurance and police would have something to say about it.

Brings back memories of the 4 of us going out in my Uncle's Spitfire when we were kids, muy sister and I sat on the boot with our feet behind the seats... It felt fine at the time but I shudder when thinking about it now..

Norm, its a Baby Weavers Opus SP from Kiddicare.com. Safe, covers 9 months to 11 years, and fits nicely in the front of the Chim.
Or the Seat grow version, which has arms that fold back when not in use.
Don't forget to turn the airbags off..... jester

Hi everyone and thank you for replying…

I originally posted this to see if someone had done it, if it was doable, but I guess, it is not worth it:
1) The car is registered as a 2 seater.
2) It would leave my little boy far to exposed and he is too precious for this…

So here is my next fantastic (I mean stupid idea): get a Cerbera and cut the roof off, this would give me a 4 seater, convertible TVR (it might twist and bed since the strength for the roof will be missing to rigidify the chassis), but hey, it would be pretty cool…

LOL, get the Cerbera and leave the roof alone - have the Chim for sunny days when the two of you can go out or the Cerb for days when the 3 of you can go..

You could (and I hesitate to say this) put a sunroof in the Cerb, even a full length webasto-type one....

Baby seat is a Maxi-Cosi Rodi XR. They've probably changed the name to something else now, but I gather the newer name and colours will revolve around a similar design.

One of the problems with my daughter is that she sits too low in the Chim and the seat belt is around her face. With the child seat in, I move the passenger seat right back. Its virtually spot on. Right height etc.
